My favorite haircut was one I got for $2 in Havana, Cuba. The guy was like a maniac, slicing, dicing, and chopping; he was done in about three minutes. It looked great, too.
Other than that, though, I've pretty much always had girlfriends or my wife cut my hair (never at the same time).

That's an overgeneralization of course, but often such generalizations do hold a shred of truth.
BTW, I have had many a haircut at those low-priced chains. Not a single one of them was any good. It was almost was if those 20- and 30- somethings weren't could enough to make it into those more expensive "stylish" salons, so they got stuck there.
However, despite the fact I get my hair cut in Chinatown now, the absolute worst haircut I've ever had was also in Chinatown, from a different salon.

Mine was in a little one chair hole in the wall in Seville. The guy was an artist, humming softly, locals ducked their heads in and chatted with him. Even gave me an old fashioned straight razor shave.

When I actually go to the barber it's 15 bucks but I haven't paid for a haircut since meeting my girlfriend, she's really good.
At the barber I do get the straight razor shave afterwards which is just about the only thing I miss.

Surely your girlfriend could provide some type of...service...that would make up for the lack of a straight razor.

I've never tried the straight razor/barbershop thing, but I never saw the appeal. What's the deal?

It's a very close shave, very. Plus, there's all the hot towels and warm lather. It's almost as relaxing as a good massage.

The warm shaving foam + an incredibly close shave (closest I've ever had) just leaves a man feeling, fresh.

I kinda get it. God knows I've enjoyed shaving a lot more since I started doing it in the shower.

By coincidence, I'm going to my appointment this afternoon. I currently pay 3$ CDN plus 3$ tip for a student's cut. It's normally 6$ but they always have some coupons I can download from their website. Of course the result is different each time, but it's generally good (except if you are in a hurry, as it sometimes take an hour for a regular cut). Before that I used to pay 23+3 with a very good barber, but that was a bit too high in my opinion. And before that I used to go to Wal-Mart (9$+2), but the result was usually very poor, but it didn't matter much, I use gel, so I can usually fix anything.

$0, the girlfriend shaves my head. Although this week she got fancy and gave me a fro-hawk. I really could care less about my hair, I always keep it pretty short anyways.

WTF is a "fro-hawk?" Like...a combination of an afro and a mohawk? Or did you mean "faux-hawk?"

Oh no, I was not talking chains. I am talking genuine old-fashioned barber shops. The kind with three to four chairs and 10-15 people waiting for a cut.

< $20, about every 4-6 weeks (when I get tired of looking scroungy). I go to a salon in the mall that actually has decent and consistent stylists.
I USED to get my hair cut every other week for about $7 + tip. But I retired, and I have the final say on my hair length and style now.

I don't care enough about the style of my hair to pay for it to be cut. My wife does it for free now, and although it isn't perfect, it's good enough.
When I used to get it cut at other places it cost about $10-$12. I didn't usually tip though when I did that... wtf is the $12 for if you just add another 80% as a "tip"? They should charge what they want from you and not hope for more.
One thing I hated in the Florida Keys was that EVERYONE wanted a tip. The tour boat guy you just paid $120 for, the vendors on the streets, the cashiers in the shops, etc. That drove me crazy.
Anyway, you guys are tipping WAY to much for a $12 haircut.

I tip that much for a $12 haircut because of a few extenuating circumstances...
1) She's a friend of mine.
2) She's a patient of mine and brings her kids in to see me also.
3) My schedule is screwy, so if I need a quick haircut at the last minute, she squeezes me in almost anytime (albeit, there's not a lot of hair up there to cut)

I'm sure they were SO happy to see you coming through their doors. Hope you're not paying the tab next time you go out to dinner with friends!

I usually end up paying about US$20 ($15 haircut + $5 tip) at a little local chain. They're usually not busy so I can just pop in, get my haircut and be out in about 10 minutes (not a very complex haircut, obviously, but not something I can do at home and my wife couldn't cut straight to save her life so that's out ).
As for tipping, I'm not sure why it evolved to be so prevalent in the service industry here...

He's right though. Tipping is really annoying. You never know the real price of a restaurant when looking at the menu (tip, taxes, all sorts of other extras) in the US. Even buying stuff in a shop adds all kinds of invisible tax. Why can't the REAL price be advertised.
What's the purpose of tipping? Just put down a real price and if the service/food is really good then a small tip can be added. If no tip is added: no loss since you're still getting paid a normal wage. Everybody is happy that way.
I obviously did tip when I was in the US this summer (20% because that's easy to calculate) but it sure is annoying. It also makes for bills that are disproportianate to the service and quality of food delivered. But you're forced to pay up. I can somewhat understand the reasoning behind the tipping system but it's really flawed since you have to pay the tip anyway even if the service sucks.

Actually, the way the system works, you're supposed to dramatically reduce or *not* tip if your service sucked. At the very least, call the manager over and have a different server assigned to your table. There are some places that automatically add a gratuity for large parties, but that's not always the case. So if you get poor service, the tip is one way to indicate that.

You know I feel for you bro. But that's the problem of the tipping culture you live in.
Tipping is expected. Once tipping becomes part of your wage it is no longer a reward for good service. It is exploitation by your employer combined with guilt tripping customers.
Not healthy.
