When developers could only make web apps for the iPhone, everyone freaked out. Why did the pundits lambast Apple for it, but are gushing over what a great decision it is for Palm since so many developers already know how to program for it? What's the difference?

They're not the same thing.

Pre apps can be installed on the device. iPhone web apps had to have network access.

Pre apps have an API for native functions such as GPS, and native buttons and UI. iPhone web apps are only now getting those features (web app GPS is new in OS 3), and didn't have them at launch.

Pre apps multitask. iPhone web apps lived in Safari, and had to remember their own state when the user left the web page.

There are more reasons like this. They're just not the same thing.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Ah, thanks for the info.

It seems Apple was a bit ahead of the curve with web apps and that they were originally hoping something like html5 would provide a rich web app experience, but the technology wasn't there yet and they abandoned it in favor of native apps. I wonder how apple's work with the mobileme apps in html5 will translate to developer tools for the iPhone. Will web apps become equal citizens on the iPhone with native hardware calls? Or has apple just jumped ship and moved on?

From the Gizmodo Pre FAQ:

Will apps be as good as those on iPhone or Android?
That's a question still up for discussion. Palm's SDK, as we understand it so far, will allow developers to create apps that lie somewhere between web apps and native apps in complexity. While apps will be installable directly to the phone, developers will not have the same level of hardware access that iPhone and Android developers have.

What does this mean? The average Yelp/Mint/Pandora type app will probably work, look, and act the same on WebOS as it would any other mobile platform. But when it comes to those trying to code resource-heavy apps—video and gaming apps for example, that require optimization and special hardware access— they will probably run into development issues using the SDK alone. Palm says they'll work with selected developers to give them more access to the intricacies of the phone, such as Telenav on the GPS app, for example.
