iTunes connecting to store on launch

Anyone know why, right after opening iTunes, it displays "connecting to iTunes store" (paraphrasing) briefly? I don't recall it doing this before. This isn't the Genius update -- that happens separately (and, of course, mentions Genius). I just updated to v. 8.2. Why would iTunes be phoning home? I'm a bit paranoid, but mostly puzzled.

If you have the setting "Automatically check for available downloads" selected in iTunes-->Preferences-->Store, that could be it. This works for apps you've downloaded or pre-purchased items such as the Season Pass for TV shows, so iTunes is possibly looking for new content.

Or if you were in the store when you last quit iTunes, I think it takes you back when you reopen the program.
