WU = Work Unit. A data packet distributed to computers to process, or "crunch" through. Completing one entitles the owner to one unit of credit from the source project, as well as public fame if that work unit happened to solve a problem.
Just what a unit is trying to solve varies by distributed computing project. In the case of SETI, it is looking for a regular sine wave from an interstellar source indicating intelligence. Other projects may be looking for new prime numbers, optimal protein folding paths, or those missing car keys.
