I have an Airport Extreme (not Time Capsule) and I notice it has a USB port on it. Is this only for printers or can I plug an external hard drive in there to backup my computers wirelessly?

Only printers are supported. I'm not sure how they did that, but a lot of people have tried and tried and only printers work through that version of the AE.

Thanks for that info. That's too bad really. I guess they want to sell more Time Capsules...

Hmmm?!?!

I have an OWC drive plugged in to the USB port on our AirPort Extreme and it works as a shared drive and as a Time Machine back up drive for our 3 Macs. Guess I must have screwed up sumthin?

I think Glenn is mistaken.

IIRC every AirPort Extreme can handle both printers and HDDs connected to its USB port. If you use a hub you can actually use several at the same time.

It's the AirPort Express that can only be connected to printers, but not HDDs.

Simon is correct. Printers only on Express. HDs and printers on Extreme. As many as you want on either with a hub.

Hopefully Apple's next generation of networking hardware will use names that are a little bit easier to distinguish between.

Knowing Apple, though, probably not.

Crap! I did the old "mixed up Express and Extreme" thing again, didn't I? RATS. Sorry.

Is it known whether cameras, iPods/iPhones, etc. will work on either device?
