Is it possible to play a DVD on a TV using the AV cables with the iBook closed?

Yep...did it last night as a matter of fact. Really worked pretty slick with no problems encountered. I waited until I had the picture displayed on the TV (actually mirroring the iBook screen), fired up the movie, and then closed the lid.

One thing however and curious if anyone else has experienced this. The iBook got VERY hot, at least on the left side. I had never had the heat problem (warm, but not uncomfortable) with several hours of use. I assume that playing a DVD takes alot of processing power and tends to heat things up.

2.5 Ghz MacBook Pro, 2GB Ram, 250 GB HD...major upgrade replacement for my recently sold iBook.

1.25 Ghz iMac, 17", 768 MB Ram, 160GB HD, SuperDrive, Airport Extreme..still a great desktop machine!

You should not close the lid... the iBooks run pretty hot as it is, and some of the heat escapes though the keyboard.

uhhh... why would Apple support closing the lid while still playing DVDs if it was somehow dangerous to the computer.

I don't think he was eliciting your opinion here.

I don't know for sure if heat escapes that much through the keyboard. But you should be able to close the lid, it would suck if you watching a dvd and the screen is shining right next to the tv.

I see everybody's point here. Maybe an acceptable solution would be to leave the lid open and turn the iBook facing away from the viewer. Crank down the brightness and maybe the light given off from the LCD backlight wouldn't be too distracting. Or close the lid some...the lid has to be closed almost all the way for the computer to go to sleep and when you're watching a DVD, even with the lid closed, the iBook doesn't sleep. As a matter of fact, I think the LCD still stays on (although when you're mirroring a DVD, you just see a backlit black screen) when you're watching a DVD and you close the lid. Or maybe it stays on anytime you have the AV Cable connected and close the lid...yeah...I think that's it. Anyway, experiment and find a solution that works for you. Try this:

Turn on the iBook, connect the cables and get the mirroring going. restart the ibook with the dvd in, and immeadiately close the lid. As I've heard, the lcd will NOT turn on, but rather default to the mirrored monitor, and autoplay the dvd once it starts up.

When I play a DVD on my TV set using my iBook the LCD screen is disabled for just the DVD playing (if I quit the DVD player the LCD once again mirrors what's on the TV). So I guess playing a DVD with the iBook open won't be distracting.
