Im looking for a good photo app for IPad that works well for basic editing - cropping, resizing, contrast etc.
when I went to the app store there were over 1000 apps regarding photos!
can people please suggest their fav's?

Did you look at the PhotoShop app? I think it's still free, and it seems to be perfect for what you're asking to do.

I'm liking Photogene.
Photogene for iPad for iPad on the iTunes App Store
I've been using the Photoshop app, but it can't handle the 18mp photos from my 7D. Also, Photogene is better at working with multiple photos, it offers more adjustment filters than Photoshop app, displays the photos metadata and allows you to export to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and Dropbox.

You're clearly an overachiever.  I've used PS on my iPhone, but almost exclusively with pictures I've taken with the phone (i.e. "smaller than 18MP"). Photogene looks awesome, especially for only $3.99.
