I'm blown away tonight. I made some screenshots of some images up in Bridge CS5, and they were 1mb apiece. huge!
Figured that out when I saw how slow it was sending to my friend via email.

Usually screenshots are only 100- 200k,

I then did a test and did a screenshot of a large white web page ( 500k), and a large black on 200K.

Totally puzzled. how do screenshots work? thanks.

The default screenshoot file format being .png doesn't help. Save the images as .jpg instead if that's good enough for you.

Some apps (MainMenu, Onyx…) and even the Terminal command line let you choose/change the default screenshoot file format if you're willing to change it.

A, thanks.
In pref, panes, I see something called screenshots. Maybe 3rd party app.
But not working, I try to change to jpeg and it wont save.
any ideas on how to get rid of that and try something else that will do that.

For just a few shots, open the screenshot png in Preview and Save As to jpeg.

If you use a utility to change your screenshot format, you may need to reboot for the change to take effect.

Usually, control-click and Remove [panel name] would do it.

OnyX is a free download.

As easy as:
1.- Parameters pane
2.- General tab
3.- Choose the desired screen capture image format.

onyx is great for a number of things...

The files are so big because the 27" iMac screen is so large. Use command-shift-4 to only capture the frontmost window, and make the window smaller if file size is a concern.
