For years I have used the keyboard shortcut to "sleep" my imac, no problems.

Recently, it has taken two attempts to "sleep", not every time perhaps 50%.

Even after not touching the keyboard and not seeing any disc activity for a while.

After the first shortcut, the iMac immediately wakes, and needs a second shortcut to "sleep" the imac.

No movement of mouse or keyboard.

Selecting "Sleep" from the drop down menus works immediately.

I don't have any problems with keys repeating in applications or TextEdit.

The only recent change I can think of is I did disable CAPS LOCK via preferences for a while, trying it now with CAPS LOCK enabled

NOPE: Still does it !!

Any ideas ?

I've found that shortcut to be unreliable over the years. Not that that helps.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Works fine for me every time (e.g. CMD-OPTION-EJECT).

Yeah, option, not control...I was at my POS Windows computer at work and didn't remember which two keys were closest the space bar on my Mac keyboard. Still, it works perfectly everytime...you may have some wacky issue.

As I mentioned, years no problem, only a recent issue, but I can't relate it to anything introduced.

However, after accidentaly deleting some keychain items, I restored a previous whole system backup from the night before, from Time Machine (2.5 hours) which wouldn't restart properly (after an hour) , so re-installed 10.6.3 from DVD and amazingly iMac retained all my previous apps, settings and histories etc, and I think the problem has now gone away.

So possibly re-installing 10.6.3 has cured the "fault" fingers crossed.

Software Update to 10.6.8, as before, hopefully no re-occurrence of problem.

I've just started using the shortcut. It's the duration of the Eject keypress. A rapid tap only works half the time, and sometimes isn't recognized even on the 2nd attempt.

If you make sure the Eject keypress lasts a fraction of a second longer, it takes every time.

Tried that with different durations of ⏏ Eject keypress, no different for me I'm afraid.

The re-install hasn't cured the problem either.

If the first attempt fails, the second attempt always works, so it looks like something isn't shutting down immediately when it fails.

Using an app kindly created byNitant, Sleep at Startup, works first time, every time, (and placed in Dock is quicker than key combination, so my new choice) as does selecting Sleep from  menu.
