Who is getting screwed by Apple?

MacMall, MacConnection, MacZone, ClubMac, MacWarehouse, Outpost.com, SmallDog, and any others I may be forgetting.

But number one on the "who is getting screwed by Apple list" is the people who assumed Apple would give these loyal companies equal treatment, and placed an order with them.

See my post in the "Outpost shipping yet" topic. I just gave up on MacZone. After finding out that a couple of local dealers have been getting them and talking with one of them, it turns out the Apple Specialists get top shipping priority (probably on par with the Apple Store). Looks like next would be CompUSA and other select retailers and lastly - mail-order. I should have a 500 within the next few days, as they're expecting some in this week and don't have many people on their call list. I'm losing a corporate discount and will have to pay cash, but I won't be waiting without a shipdate (MacZone isn't getting any explicit dates from Apple at this point - previously is was 2/1, then 2/7, then 2/16, then ???

I actually decided that I would get a PB Ti prior to the second week in February since I didn't get an order placed until Jan 17. Then my heart skipped a beat when I found out that my local campus stores order stock PB on the 10th and I was the first one in line for the 500 Mhz, so I get to be in the order within a day of release category! I heard that 6 PB (out of 25+ orders which is probably an inaccurately low but conservative guess) shipped out last week to our University. Called the stores up and recieved word that they had arrived yesterday, but to my dismay... they were the 400 Mhz. Doh! This really sucks. Our college has been a big supporter of Apple and adopt every new technology they throw out. We are literally poster children for using Apple products in the Education field. One delay... fine. Two delays... pushing it. Three delays? Come on, Apple. To add salt to injury, Apple's shipping the Ti by ground shipping.

The local Fry's Electronics (Palo Alto, CA) had a Ti on display - I didn't bother asking about any in-stock. It's a purty lookin' 'puter.

Well, after cancelling my order with MacZone this morning, I got a call from UniTek in Encino,CA. I've got a 500mHz on hold 'til tomorrow. They had one yesterday, but I was too late. MacTalk (also in the "Valley") has been getting them, too. I'm hoping for a call from them in the morning. Still looks like the mail-order houses are on the bottom of the shipping list.

A little Marketing 101: Those companies, loyal though they may be, serve almost exclusively current Mac users. Anybody looking for a Mac for the first time will almost certainly be looking in a CompUSA or someplace similar where they can touch and try out their first Mac. Apple has to send units there because they desperately need to grow their market share beyond the current user base. They know the Mac faithful will wait for their units, however impatiently, so of course we don't get top priority. It may not be fair, but it's logical.

I am one of those people who bought the PBG4 as my first mac. I went to CompUSA just to look (feel, smell, taste) it, kinda to kick the tires.

It didn't take two minutes, and I knew I had to have one. Luckily for me, they had one 500 in stock, so I grabbed it as well as airport and base station.
This is truly an awesome machine, and the wireless is just icing on the cake. Everyone I've shown it to loves it. Now, if I can just a few more people to switch . . .

Just bought my 500 at UniTek in Encino, CA. One day after canceling my order with MacZone, where Apple told them to expect a shipment sometime in March.

If anyone's in the area, they have another one there that's not taken (yet).

I was at the Fry's grand opening on I-45 in Houston, TX, today gratuitously fondling a Ti400. I can't believe how big the screen was. When I first saw it, I thought it was a cardboard mockup. It didn't look real, the screen was as bright from almost 180' up to when I walked up to it and touched it. The Apple on the top cover was right-side up. It was so light! I thought I was dreaming.

Anyway they have a few 400's in stock there. The store is HUGE as is the Ti screen.

J and R Computer World have the PB G4 400 in stock. The store itself has about 20 units, but the J and R website has too many PB G4 400 in stock. So if anyone goes down to City Hall and didn't get his PB G4 400 then order one from their website.

I ordered my PBG4 400 on 2/25 at J&R, and it was shipped yesterday (2/27)! (I confirmed the shipment at the Fedex site) It even comes with a free 128MB memory. 258MB is certainly better, but hey, it's free. I promptly cancelled my order at Outpost. Thanks Kyosho88 for a great info.

I think that everyone needs to settle down. I too am wating for my powerbook and I am going crazy, but I am not blaming Apple. All of us really know that they ARE doing everything that we can to get one. Apple was able to produce the fastest laptop in the world, put it in the coolest case ever built, and sell it to us for a really good price, although mine was $4,205.80 :-) If any of you are in manufacturing and had any concept of just how many of this amazing laptop are on order you would understand. A lot of you guys are running out and buying the laptop somewhere else and canceling your orders. You don't know how lucky you are. I live in IOWA and I just went to my local Apple store today and I asked them if they had a Powerbook G4 I could look at since I had never seen one in person. They said it was too expensive for them to buy. Hell the only products they had on display was an Imac LE and a cheap G4 tower with the old blue 15" LCD. It must be nice for all of those who can just run down the local computer store and see one....

I do blame Apple, if they can't figure out how to ship orders on a "first come first served" basis there is something wrong.

When BTO orders that are the same configuration as mine, that were ordered 2 weeks AFTER mine, have shipped, and Apple tells me mine will be another 2-3 days before it ships. WE HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO BLAME APPLE.

It is bad enough that this has happened, but what makes it worse is the fact that they sent out emails to most of their BTO customers apologizing for the delay in shipping but that they would ship them as soon as they could and that they would be shipped in the order in which they were received!! NOT.
