Every day or so I find that the alert sounds, deleting a file & emptying the trash being the most obvious, just disappear. If I reboot or log out and log in the alert sounds return and after a day or so disappear again.

Any ideas what is causing this anomaly? I've deleted 'sound' plist but that didn't help. I'm using OS 10.6.8.

Thanks

I've had the same problem for a while now. I'm wondering if it's related to my Airport Express.

In my case, I don't use airport express. This behavior just stated about a month ago and haven't installed any new applications that I can recall.

How do you have your Sound preferences set (output, "Play sound effects through", etc.)? Do these settings appear different when you lose the sounds? If you change the settings when you lose the sounds, can you get the sounds back? What happens if you plug in headphones?

I have external speakers connected to the headphone plug in. I've tried changing the setting when the sound is gone and that has no affect.

Un-pluging and re-pluging the external speakers does nothing. The only way to get the alerts back is to reboot or log out and back in.
