Spotify is adding a new subscription option to its plan roster, one which covers multiple users.
Spotify Family will provide access to the premium version of the music streaming service to up to five nominated users, with the group plan being discounted heavily compared to the single-user subscription, a payment option
Rdio first introduced in June of last year.
Each of the accounts are held separately, with each having their own set of playlists and recommendations, rather than mixing together recommendations within one shared account. Just as with the single premium account, all Family accounts also benefit from having offline listening options, no advertisements interrupting the music, and the ability to use the service unrestricted on mobile devices.
"This is one of the most asked for features from our audience," according to Chief Content Officer Ken Parks. "With today's announcement we're making it easier than ever for the whole family to experience Spotify Premium on their phones, at home, and on the go."
The new plan effectively adds $5 to the default $9.99 single-user cost, with the base two-person Family plan priced at $14.99, rising up to $29.99 for five users, representing a $19.96 saving compared to paying for five single-user premium accounts. Spotify is looking to roll out the subscription option globally within the next few weeks, with a similar pricing structure customized for each country.
