Hello all,
Is it normal for Google Chrome to be so large? Is there a way to slim it down?
Thanks

Nobody taught Chrome good manners, so it keeps updating itself without even asking if that’s OK with you and so, older versions are kept inside the Chrome app itself.
Delete your copy of Chrome, download a fresh copy and try this trick: go to your Home Library folder, there lies a Google folder.
Now change permissions for that folder and all the enclosed items by the action (gear) icon at the bottom of the info window (command-i) to read only.
Now whenever I click on ‘About Google Chrome’ which should trigger an update check/download, I get a Update failed (error:10) message. I still have to see how long this trick works, though.

That sound great - I'll give it a try. 1 GB for a browser is just crazy talk.

While 1 GB is bad enough, look what you get when Chrome’s been updating itself for three years…

Mine was 11gb- showed package contents- deleted a bunch of old versions- emptied trash- and still at over 7GB.
Go figure

LOL, this is retarded. I never used Chrome, and this will not help to make me switch sides.

It isn't going to make a lot of friends for Chrome, that's for sure. I DO use Chrome, and now I'm going to start digging into how much of my hard drive it's hogging and pare that down. But does this explain why it seems that Chrome has been taking a little longer to open now and then? Wouldn't it only use the current version and ignore all the old crap?

That's odd, I use Chrome as a secondary browser for Flash stuff (ugh) educational vids and YouTube. My Google folder in users/my_name/library is 5.4 MB (yes) and my Chrome app was 536MB. Downloaded the latest version, 190MB, so I saved 346MB.

I'm willing to bet that the entire WebKit backend that Safari is built around is installed as part of the OS, and not within the application bundle.

Give Elmedia Player a try. I can watch and download Flash videos without having the standalone Flash crªpwªre installed all over my Mac.
