The most respect I've ever gotten on the road was with my first Subaru. A truck had backed into the grill, and after that, it had a certain je-ne-sais-give-a-f**k demeanor, and people gave it a wide berth. Merging onto the Tobin Bridge in rush hour? Easy peasy.

BitD I had a BMW 325ix, and I managed to get it covered from tire to roof in mud.
Total switch in attitude. Random drivers started to give me the thumbs-up

When I had my Scirocco in college, every kid with a pre-90s VW gave me the peace sign as we drove past each other.

There's a guy in these parts with an orange and white `57 microbus, he's the original owner (or his parents were, actually), it's pristine and has >300k miles on it. I'll see if I get a pic of it at some point.

Why hasn't VW rebooted the Karmann Ghia?
I didn't understand this 15 years ago, let alone now.

I drive a normal CR-V, and I occasionally get a compliment from someone at the gas pump.

I'm still in "on the market" mode in my head, and CR-Vs make me perk up and give them the once over.

In the past couple years the Forester has beat the CR-V handily IMO, but a friend replaced a 2012 CR-V with the refreshed 2015 CR-V model last fall and it's pretty nice. Subarus always have the most mediocre/spartan interiors compared to other brands and this is no exception, but the Subaru AWD system is better, MPG and space is about the same, ground clearance is way better in the Forester, it drives better, and it's even slightly cheaper.

Yep....before the latest 2015 the CRV was a dud in comparison to the Subaru IMO. Of course I still wouldn't buy one with the low ground clearance but for city driving I'm sure that's fine.
The Mazda CX-5 was the only other compact SUV I thought was really a contender to the Forester. Unfortunately the AWD was more expensive with worse mileage, and I confess that I'm not generally a big fan of the video-game Mazda consoles.

The Scirocco was known as a hairdressers car when I grew up. Don't think that has changed much.

Really? Because I can't seem to find it on the US site. Like I said before, wake me when it arrives, as in here.

Sorry, it appears you quoted the wrong person, since he was the one who kept implying it's available in the US when it clearly isn't. So, either he was ignorant (perhaps, though unlikely) or trolling (boo).

You're frequently talking about purchasing all kind of cars via an agent. Surely, would you really want one, you would have one by now.

You can't just drag EDM (European Domestic Market) and JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) cars over to the States, at least not without a length of red tape 1000 miles long and huge restrictions. Why not? Because they haven't been tested to meet EPA and DoT specs, or they failed outright and didn't qualify for an applicable waiver (usually only granted to smaller companies who only import a few cars here each year). There are exceptions;
- If the car is 25 years of age or older (it still must pass state emissions tests, if applicable). Obviously the current Scirocco is too new to qualify for this.
- Pay an obscene amount of money to get the car tested and modified to meet standards (good luck with that, they often fail anyway). Not financially feasible or sensible and it often changes the car in ways that make it less desireable.
- Get a Show or Display waiver, aka. the Bill Gates law, which allows "certain privately imported automobiles to be exempted from the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), if the car in question is deemed to meet a standard of historical or technological significance" and rarity. However, you're only allowed to drive the car 2,500 miles /year, and typically only to and from events where it will be shown to the public. The Scirocco doesn't qualify, but even if it did it couldn't be properly enjoyed.
- Get a temporary import waiver, but that means you have to remove it from the country after a certain time (I believe it's 5 months) and can only bring it back every 3 years. This is useless too.
So no, we can't legally have them in the US.

Sigh. We`re debating semantics here, but it is available. You said "arrives" but did not specify "in the US"; and he said "it has" and did not specify "but not in the US" - because you had not limited your statement to the US. But the car has arrived, to very large markets around the world.
The point is, you then snap back at him and then ultimately accused him of implying on more than one occasion that it was available in the US, as well as trolling - when the record as I quoted it is clear that he did neither of such things.
The point is, I am confused why you seem to be accusing him of causing the misunderstanding. Your statement caused the misunderstanding.

You do have a weird perspective on things.
Man tells his son, "Wake me up when FedEx arrives, I need to talk with the driver". An hour later his son wakes him, "FedEx is here". The guy gets up and goes out to greet them, but they aren't there. "I thought you said FedEx was here". The kid looks puzzled, "No, I saw him a few streets over". The man looks exasperated, "Well, there isn't here, is it?" He wanders back to the couch. "Kids..."

Your example is completely not the same as your prior conversation that I quoted. Some reading comprehension would do you good. But I guess we should know by now not to expect you to admit to any hint of wrongdoing I guess.

Sorry, that's just ****ing weird. Who, when they're talking about something arriving or being available, isn't talking about it arriving or being available where they are? For people in the USA that car (and many like it) may as well not even exist at all.

oh freaking great globs of hell !! If someone posted a thread claiming the sky was bright blue, you nitpicky poindexter types (you know who you are) would be claiming it was midnight blue, or ceal blue, or any other color of blue, etc...and you would argue about it ad nauseam.
Way too many of you just want to argue for the sake of arguing.
I think it is funny.

Now you're getting into how much another person on the internet should have implied from your unclear language. That is exactly my point.
Look, I did not intend to make a big deal here, and it is not one. I am just saying that you were clearly snippy and snide (and accusatory) to someone who made a seemingly innocent reply to your comment. There was no basis for your sharp response and frankly, as someone who has repeatedly called for "more civility on MacNN" many times in the past, I am really not sure why you suddenly seem to have changed your mind.

In other news, a guy down the street from me has an early-70s Karmann Ghia coupe. It's really a beautiful car in person.
He also has a fully restored Beetle - cannot remember the year. (The guy had his own autobody shop his whole life so these were his side projects. It's painted in some sort of fantastic creamy white and just glows - he chuckles about how his paint job might be worth more than the car.)
He tells me that both are not much to drive, but that's pretty much what he wanted, haha.

That was snippy and snide? Are people here such delicate flowers? I think you're a bit divorced from reality. How does "arrives" not mean "arrives here", within the context of what I was saying? "It's been on sale since 2009..." Not here, not anywhere in N America, a quick Google search reveals that. This isn't about a language barrier, he and I are both speak Americanized English as our native tongue.
Here's a question for you, do you think being called a dick (which I didn't bitch about, or even report, though I could have) was an excessive reaction? Don't you think that's what escalated this (made it "a thing")? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the little tiffs here, disagreements can be civil (and fun), but there's really no cause for name-calling (especially from a bystander). Not because it hurts my feewings (it's not the first time I've been called one and it sure as hell won't be the last) but because it immediately transforms the discussion into a fight. It's so effective, in fact, it should be included as an addendum to the first corollary of Godwin's Law. I'll email Mike Godwin and see what he thinks.
