British Telecom and their dodgy line

Having just had two phone lines installed by British Telecom, I find the one which was allocated for internet use is possibly useless. We have registered with World Online and after less than 6 minutes of browsing we are disconnected, everytime. During those 6 mins the connection speed is extremely slow and it gradually drops off completely. So we tried different settings, different scripts for the modem, and more recently a new ISP (claranet) the same problems are occuring so it looks like it's the phone line. Both lines in fact as we have tried plugging the machine in each socket.
Before we proceeded any further I wondered if anyone else had experienced similiar problems and whether there was a remote chance that it might be a problem on the computer's side. (new Imac, internal 56k os9.1) BT say they do not guarantee an internet connection and are waiving responsibility it seems. ISDN might be an option but we are only at this office for 3 months. Anyway, any suggestions appreciated.
Thx

If you use BT, why not try to apply for BT's broad band ADSL? I have got it and it seems to work very nicely.

Do both the lines appear on the same phone bill?
If they do then thou have been DAX'ed
This is how BT can give you an extra phone line without installing loads of new wires all the way out to the exchange, they basically split your line in half at the exchange. No problem for voice. But it is no good at all for modem calls, because instead of 56K you now have only (effectively) half a phone line which will carry only about 33.6.
You are also right about calling them up complaining, it's pointless. They just trot out the line about guaranteeing voice calls only, even though they are always advertising the internet on TV. Basically your stuck with it, and yes it does stink.
Your best bet will be to try and get ADSL, don't let BT con you with the non solution ISDN.

we have a third line which was for voice and we've managed to get a internet connection through that. we now need to ask BT to switch numbers over (sigh) adsl/isdn are not really options because we won't be at that office for very long. We haven't been Dacs'd, although that was my initial concern also.
thanks for the replies
