There was a thread a while back about owning art. Well my wife and I are buying a painting from a Chicago artist. It's a smallish cityscape. My wife loves it and loves his work. She's been eyeing his paintings for several years now. We're having a little cocktail party to celibate. The artist said he'd come by and hang it for us.

We are

BTW George Bush's tax cut is helping to pay for it

I never had enough money to dither it away on something as frivolous as art until about a year ago. Now we own a number of pieces from locar artists from various vicinities. It feels good to own art doesn't it.

We don't have it yet. I don't know if the copyright owners will allow for a picture to be published on the internet. We have to protect our rights after all (he he he).

Owning your own art doesn't count.

Next my wife wants a photograph from a school chum of her's. He's turned into quite a good photographer. I'm sure that wont cost anything near what we paid for the painting though.

I missed the thread about art, but can't help myself <boast> my Dad owns 2 Toulouse-Lautrec originals, a Renoir, a Miro or two and a number of Matisse lithographs.

Plus a lot of other stuff, paintings and pots, some sculptures.. He has quite a collection. No you can't have his address. BTW we're not a particularly rich family, art and books was my Dad's business so he picked up a few goodies over the years. </boast>

Nice. My father owns/owned three Far Side cartoons. He bought them for $100 each years ago. After he passed a way we were going to split them amoung the three kids but we haven't gotten around to it yet. Does that count as art? Plus he bought a wood carving of a little bird. Cost a lot more than the painting we bought.

Don't know if this counts, but I own an original production drawing (not a cel) from Bill Plympton's animated film "Your Face," accompanied with Bill's signature on my order form. I could never have afforded it myself; it was given to me by my parents when I finished grad school. I'm very happy with it ... I never quite saw the point of collecting non-production animation art.

You can take a picture of your walll with the painting on it, and not worry about the legality. As long as it is not "just" the art. That's why it's not illegal to take a picture of the McDonalds arches or anything.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Put the frivolity of art together with the thread about the fact that we don't need all of this technology ( http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/ulti...&f=27&t=003904 ), and pretty soon human life is cheap as beast's (to quote my favorite play)

I don't understand. What is it about the frivolity of art and the futility of technology that makes life cheap?

Some of that stuff is really nice, but some of it doesn't belong in a portfolio ( if that's the prurpose) because of poor quality. Throw half of it out, and everything looks better ( PF specialist talking here, I spend years putting them together)
Sorry if it sounds a bit unfriendly, just trying to give a tip. ( If you've been in the art scene, I'm sure you're familiar with fellow artists nagging )

We picked up the painting this weekend. It's very nice. It was super easy to hang because the artist uses a "cleat" on the back. Just a beveled cut ply wood that you screw on to the wall and the other is on the painting. Just make sure the cleat is level on the wall and hang the painting up.

My wife is planning her cocktail party to celebrate this and other things. I'll snap a picture at some point in time. Also remember that the George Bush tax cut helped to pay for (and thus support) art and artist.

I would love to own art like that!

Mine is pretty much some fingerpainting from 2nd grade.

Well as an artist I can't say I own anyone elses. Museums are great places where I can go should I need to get that sort of inspiration. Plus since the work isn't hanging in someones private home, it's there for all to enjoy.

Most artists are usually exploited through life or have thier work sold short of it's true worth. Suffering through life creating things inspired from or to counter-act that suffering. Most of the most famous artists of the past never even became famous until after thier death. Then suddenly all thier lifes work is "priceless". It is refreshing to see someone that truly is a patron of the Arts and actual LIVING artists.

We need to eat too (and buy lots of canvas, paints, brushes, etc., etc)

Mike

Incidentally Joshu, excellent work!!! Anyway I added my vote for you on your vote thingie

Yea. My wife snapped some yesterday. I'll have to find them on the HD and post them.

This is interesting for me because it's the first real situation where color matching is an issue. My wife printed some of the pics and got very different results. It changed the whole look of the painting.

Here we go.

Seems like we bought at just the right time. The artist just got together with a dealer here in Chicago. No doubt the painting would have cost more with the middle man.

Good choice, Scott_H, very cool looking.

Don't credit me. My wife picked it out. She's been eyeing this guy's work for years now.

If you were to look at it in person you'd see the difference between it and the above. You know the photos always do a poor job representing the original. Plus I looked at a lot of the other stuff in this series.

[edit to add]

If it were me I would have spent the money to upgrade the old LX group on my bike to XT. Looks like it could cost me as much at $700 to do it. Oh well. The wife is the bread winner.
