Honestly, it stands for (LAX) "International".

PSX? It was meant to just be a filler. Nothing in particular.

X is just used to make something boring look more interesting. More importantly WTF is tsthgnyuoamhtoo? Is that Maori or something?

X doesn't mean international. I in international at most airports, BWI, ect... LAX was chosen because LAI was taken (Lannion, France = LAI), and because you can't confuse it with any other US airport (LAX is the only X in America...)

Nope. LAX is really KLAX and there is at least one other X airport KPAX, don't know if there are more or not. K is just for FAA / ICAO()international) coding, the resst about LAX is pretty much right though. I heard they chose the X because there wasn't another letter that made sense after LAI was taken so they just "X'ed" it out.

PSX is the original Playstation.

Sometimes it is used to refer to any playstation (x being a variable for either 1 or 2) Dunno.

PSone is the new version of the original playstaion
PS2 is the new Playstation.

I have no idea about LAX... I don't understand SJC or SFO either.

Maybe it's a California thing.

Yeah, and how about Windows XP? Mac OS X at least stands for Mac OS 10.

Two marketing droids talking:

"We need a name for this."

"Well it needs an 'X' in the title. That'll make it cool."

"Yeah."

Sure it is, but there's an X in Phoenix. Where's the X in Los Angeles?

At my school, the name that you use to log onto the network with is the first six letters of your last name, followed by your first two initials (for example, andersjp for J.P. Anderson). Anyway, I know a guy with no middle initial, so they put an X in the middle initial spot for him. Maybe it's LAX because they needed three letters but LA is only two.

The Greek name for Christ is Christos, the first letter of which is chi, or X.

The first two letters are chi and rho, so a traditional symbol for Christ is XP ... wait a minute ...

Just what in God's name is Microsoft up to?

Maybe LA is really a hotbed of Christianity and not the city of the fallen angels, which is what Joni Mitchell called it.

The name of the infernal city is not reallly Los Angeles, by the way, but Pandemonium (or so Milton says in Paradise Lost).

My aunt is a travel agent and I asked her the same LAX question a while back. She said that a three letter code is assigned to an airport that usually has something to do with the name of the city, but not always. I mean, if I remember correctly, the airport in Calgary, Alberta has something that doesn't make any sense. (my aunt might have been trying to get me to stop bugging her but it sounded true...) SO yeah, I dont think the X is anything more but a placeholder.

As for PSX, I read somewhere that is stands for PlayStation eXperiment. I think it was some internal Sony codename (albeit not very imaginative) for the project.

But don't quote me on any of this....

LOL!!! being from california and having lived very close to LA i can tell you that LA is NOT the hotbed of christianity! there arent many things out there that cannot be "bought", "sold", or "aquired".......

I asked this question when I first moved to LA and somebody told me it was for LA eXchange. I don't know why they didn't just call it LOS or LAN or something close.

But then isn't Chicago O'hare something like ORD?

I love searching for obscure facts:
When the Wright brothers first took to the air in 1903, there was no need for coding airports since an airport was literally any convenient field with a strong wind. However, the National Weather Service did tabulate data from cities around the country using a two-letter identification system. Early airlines simply copied this system, but as airline service exploded in the 1930's, towns without weather station codes needed identification. A bureaucrat had a brainstorm, and the three-letter system was born, giving a seemingly endless 17,576 different combinations. To ease the transition, existing airports placed an X after the weather station code. The Los Angeles tag became LAX. Incidentally at the historic sand dune in Kitty Hawk, the U.S. National Parks Service maintains a tiny airstrip called FFA - First Flight Airport.
Oh and jholmes ,here's the explanation about O'Hare:
Oh, still wondering about the world's busiest airport, O'Hare International, and its ORD code? Well once upon a time, before it was renamed for Butch O'Hare, there was a small, quiet airstrip well to the northwest of Chicago with a quaint, peaceful name -- Orchard Place.

Also, Portland (OR) International is PDX, the only other case I've heard where X = international.
