I was always wondering why 99.95% of every singe Windows user has NEVER renamed their computer.

I asked someone that the other day, and they told me it's cuz some software will not install unless it's named "My Computer."

I think Dr. Evil said it best,"Riiiiiiight."

'cause they prefer to look like know nothing dorks, the Microsoft way. Oh look honey, My Computer and My Network Places. Just like My First Step and My First Tooth.

I think Macintosh HD sounds much better.

Good question. Prolly 'cause they don't care. It's obviously not the "Won't install" thing. It can't be. It's just 'cause they don't like their computers enough.

I changed mine to say "My Laptop". I tell you 90% of Mac users never change their hard disk icon from "Macintosh HD".

I have no dubt the number of people that still have Macintosh HD under their HD icon is high, but I think Mac users are more apt to "name" there drives than are Windows users... at least relatively speaking that is!

$20 says that most windoze users don't know how. And, working at a computer shop, I can say the majority of people leave their computer to say Macintosh HD, but there are some damn funny ones that come in like "I Suck" (customer wasn't too happy with his computer at the time) and "Mr. Frisky" hey, we even get porno desktop pictures... now those are fun

Mac users are NOT more "apt" to change "Macintosh HD". Many of them are obligated to do so by one nasty bug (or feature) of the MacOS: imagine a person who is using a computer for the first time and he wants to select the Macintosh HD, but he clicks on the name instead of the icon. The name will turn into a text-entry field and the user maybe have typed "A" and then there is no way back. The user will try to press "ESC" several times but there is no way to undo the harm. This user, afraid of screwing up even more, will leave his HD labeled "A" for one whole week until he realizes he could use a more creative substitute like "Steve's HD".

The probabilities of a Mac user erasing a filename this way is about 20 times than that of a Windows user. Don't deny you haven't lost filenames this way in MacOS, which is not the "most intuitive OS".

Myself, I have lost 4 or 5 very long MP3 filenames under MacOS and I had to re-type them all. It sucked.

That's not as bad as when I accidentally clicked "clean up window" in a folder where I had everything arranged exactly how I wanted it. The harm was never completely undone.

My personal experience has been rather different. I have never felt the desire to rename the hard drive on any of the Macs that I own (though if I network then this summer, that will change). I have been perfectly happy with the Macintosh HD designation.
However, I did have to use a Wintel machine at my last job. It didn't take long before the name was changed to "My Computer Sucks."

How does "Our Computer" sound?

Fits Microsoft's mentality perfectly.

also if you hit Backspace, which is my natural reaction to any accidental keystroke, and leave the filename as the empty string, it reverts to what it was before. 'though I don't know how many OS revisions that's been around for....

Yeah, that's a good way to revert the file name. Though it is not the way a first time user will do.

Even more than keeping the MY COMPUTER name, Windows users don't often seem to know that they can Rename HDs, partitions and some Removeable Drives, rather than just leave them with just the C: D: etc. Expecially in a system with a lot of Harddrives/partitions and removeables, I find it's just plain annoying to have nothing but letter references.

If you don't rename your drives, shared volumes on a network can get reeeeal confusing reeeeal quick when they start appearing on your desktop! So I guess it depends in part on how many machines you have. I just name them after the machine so I have "Graphite", "6100", "Classic", "660" etc. although my G4 is called "Hamm".

<scarcasm>
Well, they could call it Your Computer but it would not entirely be true...
</scarcasm>

I got around that entire problem at school... We got Win 2000 prof. server so I just arranged the icons to the right side and put the Start bar up top. Added a background picture from MacDesktops.com and voila! I had multiple people at my throat. Made shortcuts of all the things in My Computer and put them on the desktop, named them Smurf, Floppy, Coaster (CD), and all the network drives... It was fun.

That is all.
Go me.

i haven't changed my computer to anything else because i really don't have any desire to... the name works and conveys its meaning well.. the drives on the other hand are all renamed as i have mutliple drives/pertitions and network connections to keep track of (my setup is such that you could be on any machine and not have anything be different except the background). each amchine has at least 3 drives/partitions: SystemDisk (OS and drivers ONLY), SwapDrive (swap file and downloads/temp folders), DataDisk (actuall programs, saves) and then one machine has Documents (mydocs, music, pictures, ect) and Backup (backups) on seperate drives. then both machines CD-Roms and zip drives are also shared.

when i do large networks...i set the my computer name to [UserName]/[ComputerName] so that machines are easy to recognize form any place and who is on it.

I have 18 partitions on my mac. All of which have unique (non-boring...well, at least to me) names & icons.

Main system drive - Life's Core with an apple core as the icon.
OS X drive - Marks the Spot with the BSD devil peaking out at you as the icon.
Download drive - Nude Poultry with a turkey in the buff, ready to be served as the icon.

I always got a kick out of 'my computer'. Just imagine the fun on the phone with tech support.

"ok, click on 'my computer'"
"How, I don't even know where you are?"

Thing is when you move the icons to the right side, you can't Line Up Icons without them going to far from the right, so it looks crapp-like.

Yeah, I know. Windows have a crap grid. The grid on OS X is a major gripe too...

On a wintel, I use line up icons, then select them all and move them further right...

I've been to damn scared to change much of anything on a Windows machine. I've done pretty well with Windows 2000 here at work. Have custom icons and have changed a few names (but not the "My" crap). The only icons I have found to be impossible to replace are Microsoft Outlook, FrontPage and Internet Explorer. No options at all.

Of course on my iMac things are different. I used Title Free to get rid of the titles below the icons. As far as renaming my drive...haven't done it. Get it harkens back to my fear of change on the Windows side of things I guess.
