This is getting ridiculous!
I just don't get it, how can they continue to gain more markets, when they are accused of monopoly?

Hope OpenGL won't go the same way as Java, Navigator and Wordperfect...

I can only hope that either the Register or their source is mistaken...if it is true, I say boo to SGI for selling!

I hope that someone with a little clout catches wind of all this and tries to do something about it. Of course, said Righteous Crusader will be 'taken care of' and the case will just suddenly cease to exist...

*sigh*

Didn't SGI and MS cooperate on a new 3D tech supposed to replace OpenGL and DirectX?

Could it be patents from that cooperation?

This is just sad, and not only that they are consuming every market...but this also means that the stronger DirectX gets, less PC games will get ported to the Mac.

You're thinking of Fahrenheit. Never saw the light of day. You could be right I guess, but nothing was disclosed, so who knows?

Personally, I don't understand how SGI could sell anything that would jeopardize OpenGL. Wouldn't that be like commiting suicide?

Maybe, but making money, for that company, is important any way that they can get it.

SGI's principle 3D assets are, IIRC, GL or Graphics Libraries, the mother of OpenGL. OpenGL is stripped down version of GL AFAIK. GL is a superset of OpenGL and has many more functions, including all the Nibs, Bones, IK stuff, high speed renderers, true Splines and texture mapping that OpenGL does not natively have.

My own look through the crystal ball, is that MS will start to produce Games drivers which can utilize GL (probably called "Direct Bill") which will still be able to operate with OpenGL as a subset to provide backwards compatibility, but which will bring much more potent stuff to Game developers who use the new capabilities and hardware producers that will now have an even better resource to sell overpriced Graphics Cards.

As long as they bring Direct X to the Mac then I am happy. Direct X could do wonders for adding fast GUI acceleration to Quartz (resize and scroll PDF on Windows for an example of how much better), add a great gaming API and add a proper HID manager to OSX.

Complain to Adobe, they use their own engine.

If you're in the market, I've got a bridge for sale...
"Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger."
