My dad wants to bring his dental practice into the 19th century this summer by computerizing his office. I told him I would only do it with Macs, which he is OK with, but I need to know if there is any dental software (right now or in development) for OS X? I checked Apple's web site and I could only find one and it's based out of France.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Not a dentist, nor am I particularly fond of them. However, I do recall seeing a report over at Macintouch about dental software. Found this link over in their reader reports section. Hope it helps. Maybe a dentist will be kind to me next time I need some work done

I'm actually in the process of applying to dental school. I know of a couple of offices I currently work with (right now I'm an independent sales rep for dental equipment manufacturers) that use macs. As far as I know, there is absolutely nothing for OS X. You'll have to consider running OS 9 for a long time. You also have to consider two different types of software packages: Front office (like patient scheduling and billing, patient tracking) and back office (digital x-ray, intraoral camera interfaces, etc). Personally, I think iPhoto, used the right way with some of the dentistry adapted digital cameras out there (I know Olympus and Kodak make digicams specifically for dentistry) would blow the socks off of a lot of the current back office management systems that cost thousands of dollars. But again, you are stuck w/ no OS X native front office software to run. Let me know what kind of other info you need. I have lots of examples of digital photos taken with Nikon 950, 990, and 995 digicams through a dental operating microscope. The quality and diganostic capabilities are outstanding. Just yell if you want me to send you some.

We were looking at Toothpics because of their promise of OS X software coming in early 2003.

kjb, what do you recommend for front-office software? All they really need is a good scheduling and payment system. I don't know how sophisticated my dad wanted to get with the back-office ware, iPhoto sounds reasonable to me. For simple dental records though, would something like FileMaker Pro do the trick?

Thanks,
Chris

What specialist software does a dentist need?

ToothPics sounds really interesting. If it is going to integrate digital x-ray, video/digital imaging and patient records, that might be just what you need. That article at MacCentral also mentions Mac Dental Suite, but I can't find any other info on it. It sounds like it may also contain all of the needed capabilities.

As for FileMaker, I'm sure, with quite a bit of work, you could customize the dbase to work in a dental setting, but I'm not positive. Ask you dad if he is ready to go completely digital, i.e. no more paper charting/ film x-rays, or if he just wants to do patient scheduling and billing w/ a computer. I'll ask around as to what people's specific experiences are w/ the current version of ToothPics.

Try nitrous oxide next time. Works wonders for me. Truly painless with the right dentist.
