I've just got a 512 kb connection and now wants to transfer large files with my PC friends.

BUT

After trying out all the instant messengers on the market, I realised that no one could do file transfers to pc's.

So what's the best solution on transferring files?

set up FTP access. If you're running OS X, turn this on in the Sharing panel.

I created a couple new users and they can log on via ftp and access their folders. 'Their' folders are just account folders that, using root, I've set to be totally open to me for editing (otherwise I wouldn't have the permissions).

This is a fast and effective way to get files from your computer to others, and if you've a fat pipe connection, then the ftp should cook.

of course you could also set up an ftp-server on the pc side (thats what i did).

there is a very nice app called CesarFTP... its just a few clicks to make an user and to set folder permissions. and its freeware if i remember correctly. i think i found it on tucows...
