i have 384 megs of ram for PS6 on a 533G4.. how much should I allocate, i use other apps sometimes at the same time.. Currently I have 98 megs allocated.. sound good? or can i afford more? thanks alot

With that amount of Ram I would set the preferred size to 200 - 250 and the minimum to 50 - 100.
That way if you open photoshop when no apps are running it will take 200 and still leave room to open some other apps, if you open it when a lot of other apps are running it will only take what's available.

I would do the same with most of the other heavy duty apps, Illustrator, Freehand, Tailor etc.

It really depends on the size of the files that you're going to be using. I find a good number to be 150 MB (I have files that are between 1 and 80 MB with about 20 layers and it seems to be enough). That way, you still will have enough memory to open plenty of other applications if you need them. Turn off VM and you'll be happier

A fast harddrive helps a lot too. Hope this helps

At work wher I have 600MB+ I have it on at + 1mb.
Some recommend this, some don't!

At home I have no choice it's on and it's slow.
I need more real ram

I have VM off, always. When I turn it on, applications seem to open faster and some things seem speedier, but Adobe has always recommended turning it off for serious Photoshop use.

576MB RAM - 55MB allocated to Photoshop. I do mostly web work, so if you use huge files, bump it up to 100 or more.

on Adobe's forums, it's mixed about virtual memory... i've tried both, and i have it currently set to +1MB over physical, and it pretty much goes nice and quick (125MB allocated to PS6).

uhh.. and i'ma try and size down my sig.. thanks for the tip.. i thought it was pretty small... so much for my knowledge of the web (what knowledge?)

It's true that feelings are mixed about Virtual Memory, but the Photoshop product team recommends that Virtual Memory be turned on if you are working on Mac OS 8.1 or higher.

Premeire filmstrip files are a lot of fun to work with, depending on the number of frames, they can get really big. that's when heapload of ram comes in handy.

VM = on!

It causes NO slowdown, is rarely accessed (practically never if set ti +1 meg only), improves memory management therefore increasing stability, speed, and apps use less RAM. Less fragmentation. Etc.

I hate running VM off.

I only turn it off when using FCP and watching DVD's.

EDIT: Ice Box, to resize your image with greater clarity, resize by 1/2 or 1/4 or 1/8 etc... if thats not to inconvenient size-wise. Just makes it look nice and smooth
PS doesnt' have to compensate as much... less lossy... etc... you know what I mean.

I admin a graphics studio at an ad agency, no one in their right mind would ever turn VM on while using ANY Adobe product. Adobe uses it's own caching scheme for it's apps - turning VM on causes trouble (at least for the 30+ people I deal with) Even Adobe says so. After Effects, Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator all act funky with VM (and to some degree AppleTalk) But Adobe says that if you have less than 64mb real ram to turn on VM, cause you have no choice but to do so.

Anywayz - If you have the RAM, use it. If you deal with 11x17 @ 600dpi then hey, you need more RAM and lots of it, get it - it's cheap now. 512 - 1gb.
But If all you deal with is smaller art at less extreme resolutions, setting Photoshop @ 30-50mb should be fine. Ultimately you need to 'feel' what works for you - heck, try VM on and see if it makes a difference based upon your working needs.

l'Ignorante: with 192Meg I would keep the old VM on 1+ over, but get yourself a 256Meg chip and stick it in, cos getting VM off is the first thing i do when I reset PRAM or install a new system, It seems to have gotten slower in OS 9.
VM and adobeVM are very similar these days, so much so that I was getting lot's of crashes when working with high-res stuff with Apple VM turned on in PShop 6. As soon as I turned it off, I haven't had single crash (well, except for importing via SilverFast Ai which is about as stable as Charles Manson on some serious amphetamines)
Another much useful thing to do is have a small fast Hard Drive allocated purely to PShop Scratch files. Unfortunately your iMac only supports USB HDs and would be too slow for Photoshop use.
Oh well, hope that helped.

With the price of ram being so cheap right now I just upgraded a friend's G4 to 1.5GB. What would be an appropriate amount of ram to allocate to PS, seeing as she has it to spare?

Anyway if you set preferred to 1GB and the minimum to 200MB you shouldn't have too many problems.

I always keeps VM off, my mac seems much less stable with VM off, I have 140 MB allocated to photoshop and I don't think it needs more. Most of the time I have Imageready, Illustrator and Indesign open they have 140 MB each. I don't use my mac for internet or office work so I can afford to turn most extensions off. I have a stable set-up this way and I rarely have a crash ( sometimes when printing a really large file )....
