I'm just wondering - you see, I consider myself to be a relatively well adjusted individual with things like friends and a girlfriend, and yet I spend quite a while a week on MacNN. Is everyone else here also normal, or do we have some geeks in here who are allergic to light and live on pizza in their rooms in front of their BSD sub-system things?? I think as far as computers can be cool, Macs are, so I have high hopes for you guys...

i guess it depends on your definition of "geek". in my book, theres geeks and nerds.

nerd - someone who perseverates on one passion CONTINUOUSLY. the D&D nerd who loves conventions and talks in gaming speak all the time, has a small shrine to gary gygax, has mailordered those stupid swords off QVC, etc. you know what i mean.

geek - a well rounded nerd. may have the shrine to gary gygax, but also can talk about their favorite black sabbath album and help you out with your computer before heading out for their favorite sushi restaurant. geeks may have their "specialty", but certainly can carry a conversation of other topics.

by my definition, im a geek. we have quite a collection of them around here.

OK, anyone who defines between geeks and nerds is, in my book, a geek. Sorry. Or maybe that's a compliment?

not a soul who posts here can be called innocent of this charge. It's inherent in the nature of the boards. Thing is, most of us are okay with that.

Sir I resent the "geek" namecalling, this means WAR!!! Pistols at Dawn!!!

I could have tolerated "nerd" or "dweeb", but "geek" is not something I want my kids or anyones kids saying in my presence.

It's people like you that disgust me.

Good day.

I am a geek by your definition, although very sadly I DO NOT have a girlfriend, There is this girl who I Think is damn hot, she is Odd, very odd. she is cool I would like to be her Boyfriend but she is odd, she will look at me and make "suggestive" movements towards me, but when i see her in the halls I seem not to exist. BTW she is not in the "popular" crowd. keep in mind I am a sophmore in highschool, not like im at work or anything. she once showed "intrest" in me, but I freaked out, your gonna kill me for this but, she wanted a "quickee" in the bathroom, I got crap for this for months! and I was like "uhhh no" i wanted ths so bad but I did not know her at the time. I now know her now and I would go out with her in a heartbeat, well as soon as she dumps her looser boyfriend. I can hope cant I? I would have only done that if I truely loved her, and I did not even know her. I sound like powerbook dude, but highschool des this to us "geeks"

Dear P.D.,

Yes you are a geek in as much as you feel like an outsider. Luckily for you this girl also feels like an outsider and sees a friend in you. The fact that you are both young and she is the type that likes quickie sex suggests to me that you take advantage of your shared outsider status and bonk like rabbits.

It is time for the boy to become a man. Make a stand.

Hope this helps,

Aunt Face Ache.

My definitions are the exact opposite as scaught's, so hell no I'm not a geek.
The folks who obsess over their FPS in Quake 3 and bitch and moan on slashdot over whether or not a company should open source their third offspring, those are the GEEKS.

I consider "geek" to be the worst of the worst, the most obsessive folks in a field.

But there ya go.

Ps. I'm sooooo not loaded.

So, um, am I a geek. Yes, a cool and good looking one though. I mean I have had girlfriends and all that. But I am not geeky in the sense that I will obsess over fps in UT, or RC5 crunch rates. Sure I like em good, but so does everyone. Wait, RC5 is really geeky, well what else is my comp going to do when it is not rendering, simulating, or comiling? Crap, um, the before mentioned is really geeky. My defense is being beaten back by myself!! Arg!!!

I might be a bit crazy though...

But I don't think most geeks read novels (not wizards of the coast stuff), real novels, so like the classics (Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr. Jeckly and Mr. Hyde, 2000 Leagues under the Sea, Moby Dick, blah, blah, blah ). I also enjoy shakespeare, and listen to classical. So I guess you could call me a wanna be thinker for the new age, who has added comp stuff to their "literature".

Chicks still dig me, still go out and get wasted (last time on vodka, wanted to do something different), can still talk to people, but I prefer life outside of school. People know I do geeky things, but they don't care. But the biggest thing going for me being a geek is my not having been Laid!! Can you believe that? I can't, oh well.

So ya PD, you don't get chances very often, take anything good that comes your way.

As bad as it looks, I'm no geek... nor nerd... or any of that.

I'm out more often than not, socialise well, have had gf's, and so forth. I just got back from a concert (Shoreshocked... Jebediah... goddamn they rocked!)

Bodyboard on the weekends during the day, go out to the tav or whatever at night, and go to uni during the week.

I don't so much as talk about computers or anything unless someone asks me something.

11000 posts, you say... meh. When I'm not at home everything but being online bores me too much. So yeah.

11011001, yes you are a geek, what kind of sane person would have a binary username?

personally, i'm a failed geek, i can't code, play chess, don't give a damn about Q3, rc5? why? seti? why?

so does having a relationship define you as non-geek/loser/whatever? personally i think not, it just proves you found someone else like you. heh, i'm pretty effin' unique!

Well... I think a lot of you guys like star wars/star trek way too much, and you are a bunch of elitist people who constantly try to be better than each other by drinking expresso, talking about VWs and audis, macs, and democratic views.

So. :| Geek...eh.. maybe. Tool I think is more appropriate.

I always thought of a nerd as a geek without social skills. So a geek is someone who excels at academic endeavours and intellectual activities, while a nerd is all that and can't talk to people on a social level.

So, I consider myself a geek.

Regardless, the original difinition of geek is a carnival freak who bites heads off chickens.

This is a trick question, right? Of course, if you really want to make that question be a foregone conclusion, head on over to the boards at Geekculture and ask it. Hell, they have a thread where folks break down what kind of geek they are.

I would have to say that Im a closet geek. When Im out on a Friday night with the boys, Im secretly thinking about better ways to hack my computer to bits. I will also not drink too much so that Im primed for an late evening of work.

How sad is that...

That's ESpresso. If you are going to be insulting, do it right.
As for your thought of us being "tools", well, here we are tooling around together, and you just jump in to troll. You think us pathetic. So, what does that make you? I mean, you do spend an AWFUL lot of time dodging your bannings, taunting, recreating personalities, etc. Hmmm. You are going through a LOT of effort to post an opinion about a bunch of people who really could not care less what you thinkn of them. THAT's a little on the pathetic side, if you ask me.

And who let you in the club you subhuman plebian? Really. Did you not see the sign on the door?

I'm going to pull your head off because I don't like your head.

I'm not a geek, nor am I a nerd or socially inept. I am simply entertained by this forum. This is the only forum I frequent, although I have tried other forums, they don't have the same entertainment value as MacNN.

I don't know anything in programming, I have never hacked or built a computer, I don't know what RC 5 is, I don't like Star Trek, I bought a laptop instead of having a more powerful desktop computer and I am more interested in girls than computers.

I hate it when people call University, uni.

It's just a school.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

I played high school football. I played high school basketball. I run and work out three-four times a week. I play basketball/football every weekend.

I'm a music freak. I have the following posters up in my room: Linkin Park, Deftones, Slipknot, KoRn, Disturbed, System of a Down, Staind, Mudvayne, Papa Roach, Tool, and Stone Temple Pilots.

I play video games. I own a GameCube.

I know html. I'm learning to program. I know (some) Unix.

I can tell you every spec of my dual 533 G4. I know OS 9 inside & out. I know OS X. I know more about Windows than people who use it ever day.

I own an iPod, digital camera, and a MiniDV camcorder.

I have my own website.

Am I a geek? Sure.
