"The surest way to kill Windows is for Microsoft to continue the way it's presently going. I've had XP on my system for three weeks and it will not work the way I want it to. I set it and it resets itself back to its 'shipped' defaults--I am unable to change them," Windblad railed. "I installed my preferred antivirus software and Windows disabled its functions. I cannot install my preferred firewall; Windows comes with its own. Last night I found a file that looked suspicious, so I manually started my antivirus program. This morning I got the results:...number of infections, 1,200."

I'm laughing my head off about this one. Sounds very common as my friend with Windows ME had so many virus infections on his HP I had to wipe the whole thing a few days ago.

if more people had macs...(20%)

there would be mac viruses too.

if we had 90%...i think we'd have the same problem, unless of course mac software architecture prevents such mass viral activity

True. but OS X is supposed to be crash-proof and the root-access is required for making major changes. I think this should help a lot isn't it?

I think the Mac architecture *does* prevent or make much more difficult mass viral activity. If you look at Windows versions of Explorere and OE, MS has let html and scripting holes (obviously "features") go open for so long, making it very easy for a virus to plague your system.

If I remember correctly ease of unpermitted use is a key feature of the Windows OS nowadays.

Well now with X we may be near the 20% mark. Why? because tons of servers and mainframes use Unix, which is the foundation of Mac OSX. I am thinking that X is a bit more subjective to viruses than Classis was, but I'm not entirely sure on this subject. As for root acess, I dunno about all of you, but I am logged in as root every time I boot into X, its annoying to be asked for the root password everytime I try to make a change otherwise....

An os x virus could get around the root restriction by posing as an installer and asking for admin password, then using your input in conjunction with the sudo command.

Only a matter of time until something comes along. I'm sure M$ would love to see this happen so they can shift the attention away from their own security problems.
