I am a NASCAR fan! Currently watching the Coca Cola 600! I'd have to say it's one of the best sports ever. Been watching since Dale Earnhardt won one of his 7 Championships in 87 (before the current NASCAR mania).

Do you have a favorite driver? I was a Dale Earnhardt fan, still am really.

No! NASCAR preempted the Fox Sunday Lineup! Damn NASCAR!

Although the Onion article about how they teamed up with NASA to form NASACAR was funny. I can't find it now because they don't archive all of their online content.

If so, that's really cool! Tell him Footy says hello! Also, ask him if I can hang out in the pits when they come to Chicago this summer.

i'd bet that seeing a NASCAR race in person (at the track) would be fun. however, watching a race on TV is rather dull as you don't get a true appreciation of the speed the cars look like they are only going about 60 mph.

Even on TV the compitition is great. The idea that someone can rub up aginst another car at 180 is pretty amazing. NASCAR driver have Elephant balls.

Footy -
Where were you two weeks ago when we were arguing about The Winston with all the rally guys and the F1 army that inhabit these boards? There's a couple of Nascar folks hereabouts. I know dillerx runs a late model in the Nascar Weekly Series and I help a Goody's Dash team with their PR work.

Good race tonight. I was glad to see Martin win. I watched him win several races when they first opened Texas Motor Speedway. He's a class guy and he needed a win after so long without. I kinda feel for Jimmy Johnson - lead a race for 400 miles and not win. But he'll get his share.

Very cool sorry I missed that thread. Great job too, you ever meet any of the top drivers from the Busch or Winston cup series?

Martin is a class act! Just a good guy in general I suspect. And Johnson, yeah he's got his head on stright too and is going to ber around for a while. Seems like all the new drivers in the last couple years have been very competitive. Maybe Johnson has an unfair advantage since one of his bosses is Gordon.

Can't argue with that, Gordon has been training to be a stock car driver since he was a pup. I expect even he will start winning some once he gets his personal problems settled.
As for meeting drivers and such - yeah we get to hang out in the pits and work with some of the teams. We have an afliiation with Foyt as our team used to race karts with AJ's son and Busch driver Larry Foyt. Most of these guys are very dwon to earth tytpes and much liketheir persona on TV would indicate.
I also race a Legends car for kicks and we use the same pits as the Busch and Craftsman Truck guys when they come to town.

Am I a NASCAR fan?

Does a bear crap in the woods?

Did Nell Armstrong walk on the moon?

Did Star Trek have Mr. Spock?

Do Adam Sandler movies pretty much suck?

Hell YES! I've been a fan since about '87 and loving every minute of it. I try to get to at LEAST one race a year, sometimes more.

(I'm also an F-1 and CART fan so I don't have the whole redneck motif going ...)

Fav drivers:
- Ricky Rudd (Who said he was their cousin? Are you for real?)
- Mark Martian (Yeah baby!)
- Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Since his first Busch season!)

Okay, I'm not a fan. I'm rather apathetic toward auto racing. I'd like to see these 'professional drivers' face football gameday traffic here in Norman and still deliver the pizzas hot. I bet most would go back home to Mommy with tears of frustration in their eyes.

I do have one question for the NASCAR fans: is it true that Jeff Gordon's wife is divorcing him because she caught him poking her 'boyfriend'?

I really love Nascar, but I don't get to watch enough of it as I am usually busy on Sunday afternoons.

Maybe we need more Nascar in prime time.

To answer the question, my favorite driver was Richard Petty. Now I basically want any of the Petty Racing Team drivers to win.

There is a rumor that he's poking Britney Spears though. I find it a little hard to believe and I haven't seen anything on the net about it. Think folks just blew it out of preportion since they've been seen together because they both have an affiliation with Pepsi.

As I beleive TigerRabbit is gay and preggers I don't think she or her girlfriend are the guy.
But the folks I know say that the Mrs. caught Jeffy with another female! I would have bet the other way myself but I'm told that he's a randy and raging hetrosexual.

One question I have tho is why is it necessary for people on these boards to see a topic about something they don't like and then be "forced" to post their opinion that it blows? Thanks for letting us know - but what did it accomplish? I'm not an alt rock fan but I don't log on to those threads to ask why they whole band can't play the same song?

And to the road race fans who troll through - Yes. We know. Nascar runs mostly on ovals. It's a spectator thing. Go to an oval track - see the whole race. Go to a road circuit and watch cars drive by in front of you very fast every few minutes. Watch either on TV and you have to appreciate the nuances for it to be exciting. Even road courses can be dull when everyone gets spread out and you're watching the "battle for position" at 17th.

Of course I'm for real, Ricky Rudd really is a cousin, albiet a distant one (3rd cousin or 2nd cousin twice removed). Our family doesn't have functions or reunions.

The last reunion we had was in 1975. I remember it, vaguely, my father tells me Ricky was there but all I remember was being stung by a bee.

Come on, you have to like NASCAR. You should take a trip down to Herculaneum next weekend to the I-55 raceway and take in some sprint cars! That is great fun and should prime you for NASCAR. You'll be ready to be a real fan in about 2 years or so.

About 35 miles south of St Louis on I-55. Take the Herculaneum exit and go left over to 61-67 then take another left and take the first left after you drive over the bridge. Can't miss it!

Boring as hell!! I'll never understand how people can watch that sh*t on TV let alone actually waste money on tickets. The just keep going around an around an around. All you wind up doing is sitting there praying for a crash, or something exciting to happen.

NASCAR is pointless: at the end of the day, even if you win you are still a fukking redneck.

What's the definition of a "redneck dilemma"? When you can't figure out how to get TiVo to record Hee Haw and NASCAR at the same time.

I see enough big ol' pick-up trucks with lift kits bearing the "ol' number 3" every day to make me puke.
Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

It is the short tracks of NASCAR that I love. (Like most of you here didn't know). Here is something to wet your appetite if you like short track racing.

Yes, it's a true redneck sport - like Ryan Newman, the noted redneck with the Engineering degree from Purdue who won the Winston last week. Or Joe Gibbs who walked away from the Washington Redskins and the Superbowl and started a Nascar team from scratch just to get into it.

I've tried really hard to be polite and accept that not everybody likes what I like. But sometimes you guys really step over the line. I realize that this forum is dedicated to airing people's opinions. But why just immaturely slam something you don't like? Why insult those of us who do? Why prove yourself to be a simplistic *******?

For those of you who "don't get it" but must tell those of us who do how stupid it is - just because you are too ignorant to know what you are commenting on - please shut up.

These "few exceptions" are just the ones off the top of my head. I'm certain that the vast majority of those in the sport don't fit the stereotype of redneck. Even most of the mechanics today are trade school graduate technicians They are every bit the professional. This isn't the moonshine runners of yesteryear any more.

A for instance - I was talking with the late Dale Earnhardt at a photo shoot a few years ago and he was telling about taking his daughter fishing. I had the typical mental image of a southern Dad and his daughter in rolled up overalls carrying a can of worms and cane poles down to the pond.
Then he continued about how proud he was that she had singlehandedly landed the big marlin she'd hooked into just off Grand Bahama.
These guys are highly compensated corporate spokesmen, well spoken and as at home in boardrooms and hospitality suites as they are behing the wheel at 180.

I cannot deny that there are redneck fans. As there also the well heeled enthusists in the luxury suites and you'll find diversity from the picnickers at the Sears Point race in Sonoma to the Poconos, Delaware, Chicago, New Hampshire and all over the country. The fans are of every stripe and creed. You need not be a redneck to appreciate speed and competition.

I'd suggest reading The Nascar Way by Robert Hagstrom an outstanding look at modern Nascar racing and marketing written by the same investment banker who wrote The Warren Buffet Way.

So he was Marlin fishing just off Grand Bahamayeah? and? That proved he was not a redneck? That proves he has enough money to pay someone to take his old a$$ fishing, that's it.

You can talk about the business or technology of NASCAR all you want, but you are just trying to separate yourself, as a NASCAR fan, from the thousands of ignorant hicks that you KNOW NASCAR represents.

Leave it to a few ass wipes to screw up what began as a great thread for those of us who do like NASCAR. I was simply asking for fans to step up and talk. Don't remember asking for the negitive responces. Hell, if you don't like NASCAR then start your own "who hates NASCAR" thread. I promise not to read it, much less screw it up with a possitve responce.

Heres the deal.

NASCAR is boring (in my opinion). It just doesn't seem like theres a lot of skill involved in NASCAR, from both the drivers and the constructers point of view.

First of all, from the drivers point of view. Its nothing but left turns, and only four of them. And its nothing but fast corners, I don't think you can really call the Winston Cup drivers the "best in the world" just because they drive 4 fast corners 300 times or something (and avoid the occasional huge pile up, which always seems to get the crowd excited...). About the only thing that NASCAR drivers have to do thats special is shift gears (or is this automatic yet?). F1 on the other hand requires a tremendous amount of skill from it's drivers. Did you watch the Monaco Grand Prix this past weekend on ABC? It's amazing the amount of concentration and skill it takes to drive that course. One TINY messup and you're in the barriers. AND, F1 courses have fast, medium, and slow corners...and every course is not identical (in my view, just about all ovals are identical. I think the only differ by banking or something). And I find it kind of boring watching the cars go in a circle for 500 or so miles...

Secondly, the constructors. In my opinion theres really nothing glamorous about Dodge Stratus', Ford Taurus', and whatever other cars are used in NASCAR drive in a circle for hours on end. Doesn't NASCAR have a set specs for the engine and chassis? Is that why all of the cars are so much the same? It takes all the skill in building a racecar out of it. If the NASCAR governing body allowed the constructors to build their own cars however they want to, then you'd notice some huge changes with teams that have money and teams that don't...This is the case in F1, its kind of breaking F1, but its amazing to see the technology that comes out of it. The current F1 cars are true technological masterpieces. Even the bodies.

I think my issue with NASCAR is that I don't enjoy oval racing as much as street courses...and F1 has the glamor, technology, AND it is widely recognized around the world as the pinnacle of motor racing.

And in direct response to you Footy, I have lived here in the US for about 8 years now and I've watched a good number of NASCAR races on TV and never really got hooked. I went to Italy last summer and the passion for F1 that people have there just drew me in. It's such a glamorous and passionate sport for the rest of the world (even Canada).
