what are all you rock fans listening to these days?

I'm listening to :

The White Stripes (like a ghetto roc/punk band)
Dashboard Confessonal (straight up emo type rock)
Jimmy Eat World ( party/pop/punk type rock)
NERD ( hip hop edged....they use a lot of guitar riffs)
Gorillaz ( too hard to explain)
No Doubt (Gwen Stefani sounds so good over that reggae rock type stuff they got going now)
Weezer (the first emo band ever and they have a new album out soon)

That's what i like now, i hope you guys try out my picks. What NEW rock music are you guys listening to that you would reccomend?

New music, as in currently putting out albums? Dream Theater. Because balls & chunk is where it's at.

Oh, and when the new Rush album comes out in a month, I'll be first in line.

And Tenacious D. They rock your socks off, so I think they count

god no.

brief music history lesson.

back in the 80's, following the punk movement came a brand of music that was "hardcore punk" which after became simply "hardcore". out of "hardcore" and specifically the washington DC music scene came a brand of hardcore that was dubbed "emotional hardcore". the early bands of this genre (around the late 80's) are bands like rites of spring, moss icon and embrace. hardcore-ish music, but with a more emotional side to it (ie. not screaming about politics and whatnot i have feelings and im gonna scream about them).

anyway, emotional hardcore soon after was just referred to as "emo" and MANY MANY different bands fell under this label, all of the bands were very "grassroots" for lack of a better word and fiercely independent. NONE of them poppy sounding, most were rather intense singing or just flat out screaming (see: current, policy of 3, still life, etc). somehow along the line, the intensity of the music sort of gradually fell further down and further down and eventually a poppy band (like weezer or jimmy eat world) was being called emo.

anyway, i mean no offense TMCW, you just hit a sore spot with me. please dont call weezer "emo" or "the first emo band ever".

Ahhhh, the difference between a good band and a popular band. A good band is always good. A popular band falls out of favor, and it's revealed that they were never good to begin with.

Also, in addition to Weezer not being the first emo band, they aren't really emo to begin with. File under Indie-pop/Indie-rock.

hmm for recent R.O.C.K. (last 2 years)... I like Gorrilaz (for the punky Damon stuff - the hip hop doesn't count here), The Hives, White Stripes, International Noise Conspiracy (like the Hives, the videos for the singles are better than the albums), Grandaddy, The Strokes, the Dears, The Shining (only heard demos though... the singer could suck, but I'm not sure, yet at least Simon Jones is back), Badly Drawn Boy, Andrew W.K. (he reminds me of Richard D. James in the looks dept.), Cat Power, Super Furry Animals, The Shins, The Donnas, I'll add more maybe. I can never remember the smaller bands' names (there are lots of indie bands, aren't there?).
When you were young and your heart was an open book, you used to say "live and let live."
But if this ever changing world, in which we live in, makes you give in and cry, say "live and let die."

ok, weezer is the first modern emo band ever. the name was brought back for them and their offshoots these last few years.

if weezer wasn't around, those three letters would have no meaning. i agree with you in technically speaking...no. so i will say they are the first modern emo band ever.

and wow, you seem genuinely upset...take a chill pill. this is a message board, not a quiz show.

That's just not true. There are plenty of emo bands who are popular within their own little emo world, quite independent of Weezer's popularity. And, again, I must stress that Weezer is not emo.

I've been listening to Quasi, GBV's "alien lanes," and Blonde Redhead nonstop for the last month or so.

P.S. Pathogen, that Broadcast album in your sig is HOT HOT HOT!!!

Let me show my age here:

I don't listen to a lot of the rock that is produced these days, not because it's bad, it's just I am into it as much anymore so right now I am listening to:

Pink Floyd
ZZ Top
Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers
The Doobie Brothers.

i liked Weezer tho for reasons that woul be imcomprehensible to most people

i think you read too much spin or rolling stone or something. just trying to be informative, i tried to quantify my rant by saying you hit a sore spot. you can call weezer whatever you want.

In the car I heard a song by a German band called Rammstein. I didn't get all the text but it sounded like it was the complaint of an unborn baby about to be aborted. Wowww !! "MUTTER" (mother) it's called. Extremely heavy, blew all hiphopflapflop dudes right of the road.
Anybody know the album?

Millencolin

Love their stuff.]

Wow, people still listen to rock? (kidding)

Um...

Check out Man or Astroman, Pavement, The Rentals, and Atari Teenage Riot. You might like Modest Mouse too if you're into emo-rock (Or whatever I'm supposed to call it).

(BTW, NERDs album is fantastic)

Good **** . Engle is my fav, but Du Hast is great as well. Haven't heard MUTTER yet, my buddy has a uncle stationed in Germany so he would send back some CD's which was sick. Like 3 months later they made their american appearance, we were like "WOW!"

And as for the rest of this thread, I don't know what happened to the name "rock" because 90+% of these bands I do not recognize at all.
okay...lets see...
  • Metallica
    Aerosmith
    AC/DC
    Tool
    Megadeath
    Sublime
    Jimi Hendrix
    Doors
    Pink Floyd
    Alice in Chains
    Nirvana
    AFI
    Fear Factory
    Coal Chamber
    Gun's N' Roses
    Rage Against the Machine
    Slip Knot
    Smashing Pumpkins
    White Zombie
    ....and on and on and on....

I tried ot keep it to 'rock' but its' always so hard.
The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive.

I'll second, third, fourth...(I think you get it) this nomination. The Refused disc rips.

As for Modest Mouse, I highly recommend them also. I know not of this emo designation, but I think indie pop suffices quite well. Oh yeah, almost forgot. Elf Power is another really good band.

Currently on my iPod...

* Gomez
* The Hives
* Puddle of Mudd
* Vexx Red
* Creed
* Static-X
* Nickleback
* Lost Prophets
* Slipnot
* and many others...

Rock/metal is really going through a rennaisence at the moment. Shame that so many British kids (traditionally where some of the best Rock music originated) seem to think that being a DJ playing records somehow makes you a musician... Hopefully the likes of Lost Prophets and Vexx Red will turn that tide.

Rammstein rock. They're insane live, so I've heard... I'd love to see them.

Du Hast... Das Modell... aaaaawesome stuff. Heavy as.

But... my current rock/punk faves:

NIN
Manson
Coal Chamber
RATM
Garbage
Foo Fighters
RHCP
Mudvayne
Slipknot
H20 (very fast punk... awesome stuff)
Pennywise
Less Than Jake (ska... but they fit as punk too)
Radiohead
28 Days
A Perfect Circle

(yes, I consider them all one form of rock or another, from goth and hard to soft).

I can't think of any more right now. They're just the ones I listened to today.

You have no idea...

Anyway,

I am listening to:

- Van Halen
- A-ha
- Peter Gabriel
- Talking Heads
- Tears for Fears
- Duran Duran

but not necessarily in that order.

I'm sorry, but I can't listen to anything younger than 80's these days. IMHO there is so much crap out there, I can't be bothered to find the good stuff.

That is the first post in this thread that I read and said, "Hey, I have all of those band in iTunes!"

Oh, and The Cure rock. I've been listening to "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" for a few days now, right since I got off of my "Pleased To Meet Me" Replacements kick. I like my iPod

On a decidedly different note, I'd like to toss out

SCOTS (Southern Culture on the Skids) -- some of the goofiest Southern-fried rock out there. Alas, I lost the CD of theirs I had, and my couple attempts to reacquire it have turned up nothing. *Sigh*

ok, now I'm officially old.
the majority of these band names are completely new to me.

I was going to post my list, but after reading this thread, I realized you young whippersnappers wouldn't even know who I was talking about, either.

I'll give it a shot, though my tastes are somewhat eclectic and therefore some of these bands could just as easily be classified r&b or something other than rock:

1. Aerosmith
2. Van halen
3. Procol Harum
4. Pink Floyd
5. The Beatles (yeah, those guys)
6. The rolling stones (yeah, those other old guys)
7. The Who
8. Janis Joplin
9. Vallejo
10. The Clash
11. David Bowie
12. Paul Simon
13. Stevie Wonder
14. Sade
15. Eurythmics
16. R.E.M.
17. Joan Armatrading
18. Robert Cray
19. Fleetwood Mac
20. The Pretenders
21. REO speedwagon
22. The Grateful Dead
23. Frank Zappa

oh well...that's enough from this old geezer.

Vallejo was an unexpected find. At our newspaper, for charity every year they sell things sent in for review, including CDs, books, pc games, etc. to employees. the money goes to several local charities.

Vallejo's "Into the new" CD was in a group of CDs I got for a dollar, and I gotta say, I'm lovin this album. There are two songs on it, "Into the new" and something about Muerto is Certo...forgive me my spanish is nonexistant. That Iisten to on the way to work. If you ever run across the album, those two songs are worth the price. The rest of the songs are competent, but not at the same level.

I have no idea if this band made it commercially or if you can easily find them in a record store. If you can, do.

Dream Theater
Ozzy
old Queensryche
classic Van Halen
Rhapsody
old Maiden

thus makes up the bulk of my rock library. I do listen to rock about 50% of the time- the rest of my time is divided up by jazz, blues and baroque.

I don't have many rock tunes on my laptop which I usually play at my office. What I do have:
  • Pixies
  • Shriekback
  • Gang of Four
  • U2
  • The Jam
  • Mott the Hoople

Yikes, it looks like the soundtrack for That 80s Show.
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

Awriiight! Shriekback and Gang of Four! Good sh*t!
I'd also like to encourage folks to check out Wire and the Raincoats, while we're on an 80's binge.
And to add a contemporary band (that just broke up, sigh) - Rustic Overtones.

What NEW rock music are you guys listening to that you would reccomend?</STRONG>
Gorillaz is an amazing group! I dig their stuff highly. Sorely disappointed when I didn't see them in Toronto back in February... grr...

Weezer is one of the best bands to listen to while kicking hackysack!
