What's to decide? The iPod syncs with iTunes. Case closed.

The Archos has its merits, no doubt about it.

However, larger HD space is pretty worthless if you figure it takes eight *hours* to fill up via USB vs. a couple minutes via FireWire.

If that doesn't bother you because you don't plan on using it as an external HD, there's a few more things to consider:

- The interface. I haven't used it myself, but a web search will spit out reviews that state that the interface is rather, er, arcane, if not downright flaky (though it's improved somewhat with later revisions). The iPod, which I have used, is a dream. There's no other way to put it. It doesn't do much, but what it does, it does incredibly well.

- Size/weight. YMMV.

If you need an audio input (and that's one of the points that's keeping me from buying an iPod), it might be sound advice (teehee) to wait until MW Tokyo and the rumored iPod update. The decoding chip on the iPod is certainly capable of handling audio input as well, so it's really "just" a matter of sticking an extra jack on there and implementing it in software.

FWIW.

What I am really hoping for in a iPod upgrade is a LINE-LEVEL output port.

This is very different to the headphone port. This is one area where Apple need to sort their stuff out.

There is no reason for them not to include it at minimal cost.

It would add no extra size to the unit. Just look at the size of MD players with a whole host of ports........LINE IN, OPTICAL IN, LINE OUT and HEAPHONE OUT.

Makes iPods one little audio port look a bit pathetic...

The Archos thing also has firewire. It is also capable of acting like a HD. The user interface probably sucks compared to the picture-perfect iPod.

But this thing would be ideal for on the road presentations and the like. To me this thing seems to be a jack of all trades type of gizmo. All the iPod can do is play music.

I love the iPod but the new Archos can play videos !

The 10Gb disk is big enough to put all your iMovies and if you think the screen is too small (237 x 234 pixels), you can connect it to a TV.

The Archos is what the iPod should have been to be as "breaktrough" as advertised.
