I can't believe how time flies. Congratulations to all the Apple engineers who have worked long and hard to make it a success. Yes, the baby has to learn to walk but it is getting there.

Post your memories of a year with OS X. Including the top 3 things you like about the baby!

Here are my favorites:

1. Aqua. Isn't it such a good looking baby. Awww such cute icons. Yeah, it pees on you from time to time but...
2. iApps. Elegant and powerful. Simple yet solid. Will only improve with time...
3. Networking. Best I've ever experienced on any system...

1. Stability
2. Networking
3. SMP

On the other hand:

The iTunes 2.0 intaller that wiped all but my Mac OS X partition. Lucky for me I had just upgraded to Office v.X so the mails were saved. Imagine hearing a lot of sound from the harddisks and wondering why all of them are reading/writing - taking a look and ALL of your data is gone!

Lucky for Apple that I just love all of their products (with the exception for the 52/53xx and 62/63xx series :-))

HAPPY BIRTHDAY OS X

Happy birthday OS X.

Three favourite things:

1. Stability.
2. Pre-emptive multitasking.
3. UNIX base (and all the goodies that that brings, like X11, command line, ports etc).

Let's hope that by the NEXT birthday I can add three more favourites:

1. Speed.
2. Responsiveness.
3. My beloved apps!

The infinity character appears to be a Mac only character. If you get the HTML equivalent for it, it returns &Mac176; which I don't believe Explorer supports (not sure about OmniWeb... let's see)

Hmm you started the topic on the 23 but I have a shirt that says the 24.

1 Unix Stuff. apache mainly
2 Aqua.
3 Networking. But IE5.1 is confussed everytime I use a different connection.

things that need work

1 PERRMISSION!!! why does root user "root" not have root permissions. I can't touch some system files in root.
2 speed. aqua needs speed or LSD or something.
3 anyone else have this problem...I set a folder to display icons this way. I restart and they are set back to OS 9 size and not by name or in a grid.

and above all get at least one good browser....IE is bad but knows flash and other plugins better than others so I use that mainly.

Happy Birthday, OS X.

Things I love/got addicted to:

1. Unix power such as Apache, TeX, etc.
2. Aqua (I seem to be one of the few who loves Aqua).
3. Rock solidness of the system.

Complaints:

1. The filesystem (killed my system 1,5 times) -- we need a journaling filesystem
2. Speed up Aqua.
3. Gimme a working Finder that is still responsive when doing another task, such as copying!

But overall, I work with it since I replaced my PowerBook G3 (Kanga ) with an iBook 2.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Let's see, last night at one point I was:

1. playing iTunes
2. installing Developer Tools
3. burning a cd
4. downloading from IE
5. downloading from ... another program

at the same time with no hiccups. HAPPY BIRTHDAY OS X!

I can just look at my 9 installation funny and it'll go down.

Root does have all permissions. Are you sure the files aren't locked? If so, you need to remove the lock flag using the chflags command. Standard Unix stuff.

Hey I had a Performa 6300. It was an ok computer, of course I bought one of the late models that didn't have the onboard issues.

I'll first of all just echo the sentiments of everyone else and wish Mac OS X a very happy first birthday. Even if that does sound completely sad!

Now, my 3 main gripes:

(i) Lack of 2D graphics acceleration on any machines.
(ii) Lack of acceptable network integration (browsing Windows networks, sharing files on Windows networks, sharing printers, sharing an Internet connection, etc).
(iii) Lack of decent power saving features for laptops.

We'll hopefully all be able to look back to today on 24 March next year and see if all these have been addressed.

A year later, the best parts are definitely

1. Column View
2. Preemptive Multitasking.
3. Aqua
4. Protected Memory

Slightly overrated, but still good:

1. Digital hub: Camera, YES! Awesome. Scanner, printer, Audio... um, no.
2. Stability. Better, but not perfect.
3. Terminal. I'm not UNIX savvy, since my computer experience is solely Apple, but I like it, and am learning new things.
4. iApps-- don't use 'em much. iTunes occasionally, iPhoto rarely, iMovie, never. Doesn't mean they're not good, they just haven't positively affected my experience.

The bad:
1. Slower than 9. ( I mean GUI usage-- it does some things faster, like copying files and emptying the trash . It just "feels" boggy sometimes)
2. They've been pretty slow with widespread bug fixes.
3. Users, Root, permissions, Netinfo mgr. all too arcane and complex for a single user. How about a single user version without User folders nested six layers deep? We HAVE to become power users just to make this thing work, sometimes.
4. A year later, it's still VERY much a work in progress, esp. as far as third-party developers go. I think we were misled on the timeline by Apple, and made to believe the transition would be much more complete by now.

I'm saving my salutations until 10.1 turns one year old.

10.0 was a premature fetus that Mamma Steve birthed before its time . . . 10.1 was the real baby.

This time last year I stood in line at midnight to be one of the first mugs to buy OSX 10.0. When I got home and installed it I had a nightmare when I saw how incomplete it was and the DP/PPP kernal panic bug occured in the first hour.

Since then things have improved a lot but then it should have.

1. The GUI is getting faster but still isn't up to speeds reached by a normal GUI.
2. Features have improved and more are coming.
3. The iApps have made it a very rewarding experience.

The downsides are:

1. There are still inconsistent bugs that a modern 2002 OS should not have. Windows or Mac OS 9 don't have them, why should OSX?
2. Video and 3D acceleration are stil not where they should be.
3. There is no three!

What a year...and what a success!

There are still some things that I would like ported over to X from 9 (like Diablo II, for instance... ). But otherwise, I'm glad.

Windows and Mac OS 9 have other bugs that Mac OS X doesn't have.

Happy birthday Mac OS X btw.

1. Aqua/Dock
-Seriously, I love Aqua a million times more than any GUI and whether everyone hates the Dock or not I find it to be one of the most functional things Apple's ever incorporated into it's OS.
2. Multiple Users
-So nice not having to argue with family members over what desktop pic to use and just being able to customize one's workspace without worries.
3. Preemptive multitasking
-I *really* hate having the system hang in 9 when a page loads in IE or when ICQ loads.

Happy Birthday, OS X!! ^_^

Happy Birthday OSX

Its been a rough first year, and you forced me to abandon my beloved Lombard for an iceBook. Still, I've stuck with you and Mozilla, and things just keep getting better.

My top 3 good things:
1. Pre-emptive multitasking
2. The dock - has simplified my desktop.
3. Column view - has radically simplfied the Finder.

Top 3 bad things:
1. Finder is too slow, iDisk is disgracefully slow, icons and windows still don't remember their positions!
2. I still need to boot into OS 9 because I don't have drivers for my scanner or Webcam.
3. USB and energy saving remains the achilles heel for me.

Happy Birthday Mac OSX!

Your three best traits..

1) Stability
2) Coolness (come on you know it... ok, call it Cocoa, Unix, Aqua, whatever)
3) For making proud, once again, to say I am a Mac user.

No negative things, hey, it is your birthday after all.

Mac OSX on both of my machines for 1 full year!

I stared in horror when no one gave MacOS X a birthday cake so I ran to FoodShop (er, I mean PhotoShop) and bought some foods then went back to home (Finder). I put all of the foods on table (Finder's Window) then layer and bake them (Photoshop's paint tools). After 20 min of baking, here it come:

Happy Birthday, OS X! You are now officially One Year Old!

I was one of those that followed OS X from the baby days of the PB... and was one of those that also rushed out first thing in the morning of the 24th to get my copy. Ooooh X... so many memories you have brought us. The ups, the downs, the endless bitching in the forums and countless nights spent awake seeing if anyone had info on the latest build.
