I have an NEC SuperScript 1400 laser printer. I like it a lot, but they've been slow to come out with OS X compatible drivers. I've sent several emails in the past few months and received predictably vague replies. I tried again yesterday and got this answer:
The 1400 will not work in Mac OS X. It has hardware limitations that prevent it from workin in a UNIX based environment.
When I asked for elaboration, the NEC tech said this:
The 1400 is not a PCL or a Postscript printer. It uses 14 bitmap fonts and is not upgradeable. Those are the hardware limitations.
I checked the specs, and they do say that it uses 14 bitmap fonts. However, it also lists PCL 4.0 as the supported printer language.
More generally, although I have none of the expertise necessary to evaluate such claims--vague as the first one is--I don't quite buy them.
Can anyone here with greater knowledge confirm my instincts? Thanks.
