It just struck me it would be rather nice if you could disable your post count on these boards. I'm sure there's a lot of people like myself who cant stand the "Oh look at me I've got a really high count, therefore my opinions are more important than those of a new member" attitude that a monority of people here seem to have, and this would be a simple way of distancing ourselves from that.

Ah, yes. But there are waaay too many americans on this board for that to work. We know that they thrive off that sort of thing.

Oh, and by that way, I have more posts than you so I don't care what you have to say.

Ah ha! But I've been around longer than both of you so therefore my nob must be at least six feet longer than yours. (Assuming you're male of course).

So there!

PS. Sorry to have degraded this topic.

I feel we might be letting ourselves fall prey to potential sheep jokes due to our georaphical locations

BTW, six feet LONGER, that's pretty long!!!

Well I had almost 5k posts under my MikeM32 name, until it got banned or deleted or something. Anyway, I don't give two sh_ts about post count anymore and I'm american. Whatever they can give you they can also take away.

I've totally changed my outlook on the whole post count thing and it's meaningful-ness. It would be great to just be capable to switch them off post count shouldn't be used as a motivation to keep people "in-line" or for one to try to keep a specific user name or be used to rub into other peoples faces "ooh look at my post count" etc., etc.

I think this should definitely be optional. If people want to display their post count fair enough, but it would be cool to be able to turn it off as an option in your profile. Mods, would this be possible?

You should be able to carry over posts from other forums. For example, I have almost 900 posts at the Macworld forums, yet I'm a newbie here. What's up with that?!?!

Remember, I know people at other forums with 45,000 posts or more. Fat, bloated, wasted husks of people with 45,000+ posts.

Sure anybody that's been on this board since '90 would have so many post they just don't care

One feature I would like to see is the ability to set your own title instead of the automatic "junior member", "senior member", etc. With the exception of "Moderator" of course. Isn't the title redundant with those stars and post counts.

What I dont understand is what the post count and member classifications are supposed to achieve? Strikes me as having come about simply because it's technically easy to do, not because there's any possible justification for it.

No, it isn't.

Profile corruption, it's an error. It was nowhere near 5000 anyway

I don't get what the point of this thread is. You want post counts turned off? Why? I mean if they're so unimportant to you, ignore them. Is that so difficult? That's what I do. I don't give a **** about post counts.
Anyone that judges a post based on how many posts the poster has is a fool, and let them be sucked in by it...

Things are fine as they are. It's optional to let it influence you, y'know.

Perhaps we should look into a post-count bartering system, for those who really think post-count adds weight to their comments.

well, it's kind of an indicator. I use post counts this way:
1. idiots/trolls with high post counts, I know that most of their posts are rubbish.
2. cool/rational/helpful people with high counts, I know that what they have to say is worth something. You know, a kind of conundrum of

"He who knows does not speak.
He who speaks does not know."

ooohh. and enlightenment shall fall upon thee...

You have got to be kidding ! I have a five digit ICQ number, and it's *worth* something ? How sad. I'll gladly sell it for a number of alchoholic beverages, something that means something in the real world.

Are people really that sad ??

Ben

What would be cool is if the different post counts actually gave you stuff, like the ability to use different smilies etc But that would result in even more crap being posted that is currently done today.

P.S. err. +1

Yup ... that number is worth something on e-bay. Do a search on ICQ number ... they show up now and then.

Oh this is truly sad. A seven digit number is worth $5.50 US, with 4 days left on the auction, and three bids made.

Maybe I'll hang on to it for 20 years and you'll see me on antiques roadshow one day

Ben.
