Yeah, that is what I was thinking. All my mom does is surf, email, and facebook. She doesn't really "create" anything. I see this as being really popular with "consumers", not "creators". It allows you to consume the web, music, video, crappy games like old people enjoy, and email.

Yes, but it's not selective, pay-as-you-use-it.
And that the device comes UNLOCKED is awesome. Go on vacation, get a cheap pay-as-you-go dataplan SIM and you're set.
Pretty sure that we'll see Skype and other VoIP show up at some point. Paired with a BT headset - awesome.

Hehe. But seriously, the Kindle was doomed out of the gate. The eInk, lack of real connectivity, and a crappy interface, along with other reasons were why I never wanted to use it. I knew, KNEW that something would kill it someday. I had no idea it would come from Apple, but holy crap, I look at a Kindle now and it looks 20 years old compared to the iPad.

I think I hit it pretty squarely. This is a giant iPod touch (WIFI only) or an iPhone Minus Voice (3G).
Pros:
+Jobs looked and sounded much better.
+Custom Apple CPU was unexpected and a positive sign (and, dare I dream, a sign that the PPC could return!!!!)
+Choice of WIFI-only and 3G models is a good thing (we'll see how long Apple maintains the options given sales trends)
+iWork and new iPad exclusive software sounds good
+Screen and hardware generally looks very nice
+Keyboard accessory
+Pricing is better than I feared
+Should be a step forward for the iPhone OS platform
+Benefits of iPhone touch interface
+ Fits in VaJayJay
Cons:
-Storage inadequate (why in a device so big is the flash capacity so constrained?
-Constraints of iPhone OS (no multitasking) and Apple control - not a general computing device
-People will bitch about not having Flash
-Could cannibalize either iPhone or iPod touch sales
-Not entirely convinced it's better than a PC netbook

The iPlop has arrived. No WebCam, video conferencing, no deal. I knew it was going to be an at&t device when no cam was in view.
They simply do not have the network for it. The date plan is for a 3G iPod Touch. Not a tool to "change the way I do things".
Not by a mile.

You completely miss what this is all about :
It's the KINDLE KILLER.
Same price, but does so much more.
Apple is going to rule the e-reader market just as it does the MP3 player and smart phone market.

Sold.
Video out for presentations and some light writing are main reasons I need a portable. This pretty much hits that sweetspot and frees me go for a more clear cut Pro Workstation + Tablet strategy from now on.

The problem with being a Kindle killer is that Kindle was stillborn.

I think this is MUCH more than a kindle killer. Think of all the non-techie girls, or old people that buy laptops purely to surf/shop/youtube. This is PERFECT for all of them.

It is certainly more than just a Kindle killer, but the point is that the Kindle really needs to be reworked to be competitive.

Not until they have the same level of access to Amazon's store. There's no way they'll have as many books available. Also, reading a book on an LCD, even a very good LCD, isn't exactly ideal.
The iPad looks nice, my wife will probably buy one, but for what I do, I'll keep my Kindle.

It needed to be reworked out of the gate. It seems now that Amazon hacked together whatever tech they could use to make it, thinking nothing better would come out. Two years later...BAM! Kindle's dead.

This is the perfect device for my parents and for my wife. If all you use a computing device for is consumption, rather than creation, the tablet is perfect.
The only thing that is an instant deal breaker for me is the lack of camera. Otherwise I would have bought one for the parental units the second it came out, installed Skype on it and told them to press this one button when they wanted to see us.

So still no flash? WTF? With a device this size, they can't blame it on the processor any more. How do you do Hulu with no flash? I guess it really is just a big iPod touch

Yeah, that's not very good. Maybe it'll force Hulu to go to H.264.

So, it comes down to reading a book on an LCD (IPS panel). I've tried that and the eye strain is pretty bad after a while.

Yeah, Gruber's explanation makes a ton of sense: Flash is the only ubiquitous proprietary Internet standard. Apple has no control over it, and Apple likes control. Apple also has a thriving iPhone OS platform with a user base that (sometimes begrudgingly) accepts the lack of Flash. Apple is stuck with Flash on the Mac because it's a general platform, but the iPhone OS is a walled garden that Apple controls, and as long as the platform is successful Apple has essentially zero incentive to support it.

Lost one argument so you have to start another?
Whether the screen is better is purely personal preference.

I'm pretty sure I pointed that out earlier. Being a defensive shrew doesn't change the fact that reading a book on an LCD panel isn't ideal and does cause more eye strain. That's just a fact.

As I pointed out earlier I've tried to read for long periods of time on a high quality LCD (all my displays are IPS panels). There are issues with glare in some locations, the contrast is too high, and they're usually too bright.
The iPad is definitely a better all-around product, there's no denying that. You get much more for your money. However, as an ebook reader the Kindle is the better appliance. Epaper is simply superior for that kind of thing. If you're going to be reading a novel for several hours with your iPad you'd better have some Visine handy and plan to take quite a few short breaks to give your eyes a rest.

I do not think Amazon really wanted to make the Kindle in the first place. They would much rather sell their content on a hugely, popular device instead of having to support their own device. At the time, there was just nothing they could really use and give customers the experience they wanted.

Unless they want to make their install base happier. The lack of copy and paste was retarded, and so is the lack of flash.

Maybe you haven't been noticing the changes going on on Hulu. They're trying to convert it into a pay service, and much of their free content is going offline. The last number of times I've gone looking for an episode I wanted to see, I find that it's no longer around.
