Top Artists of the Week:
1. Jack Johnson
2. Donavon Hill
3. David Crowder Band
4. Dean Martin
5. Leeland
6. Pocket Full of Rocks
7. Hillsong United
8. Discover America
9. Jonny Lang
10. The Beatles

The new Jack Johnson album is mostly crap, by the way. I love listening to JJ when I'm in a mellow mood (or wanting to be), but this last one felt very, very forced. I was so disappointed that I started playing his old stuff, and I wound up listening to it all week.

I recognize 3 names, and the majority I don't come of as... southern.

Meh. Psshhh...

Not one "Southerner" on the list. I'm not a country music kind of guy. Some of the groups live in the South, but how many artists hail from Nashville?

How the hell does that not make them Southerners?

David Crowder Band
Pocket Full of Rocks
Hillsong United

All sound very Southy to me.

More importantly, how many Artists that I listen to hail from there? I imagine next to none, therefore my point stands.

Hillsong United is from Australia.

David Crowder Band is from Waco, Texas, but has anything but a Southern sound. I believe they're listed as "Electronic Rock." Pocket Full of Rocks is also from the South, but is a modern worship band.

So, yeah...2/3 from the South, but not "Southern." It's not like they play bluegrass and Alan Jackson covers at their concerts.

I'm glad you like the selection this week, but I'm afraid to tell you that I don't base my song selection on what you'll be less likely to mock.

And for the record, I was listening to Mute Math (when they were Earthsuit) before anyone knew them. You see, they're a Southern Band. *nudge*

I wish that Last.fm would actually sync with my iPod and see what I've been listening to away from the computer. My playlists doesn't accurately show everything I've been listening to. I'm still splitting tons of time between Mayer and Jonny Lang.

Hmmm...I'm going to have to go search it out then. I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

You know, I should probably be paying attention to this difficult Physics class instead of trying to tweak Last.fm...
But I'm not gonna.

Figured it out. I have to disable the "manually manage music and videos" option in iTunes.

Here's an idea:

Instead of just posting our top artists for the week, why doesn't everyone who's involved here (it's only three right now, basically...OTHER PEOPLE, COME JOIN) pick an artist from the week, preferably one they weren't as familiar with before, and say what about their sound drew us to them. The point being to help introduce each other to some artists who may be getting less recognition than they should.

It doesn't necessarily have to be an obscure band or artist; just someone who you might not have appreciated as much before. Anyone else up for this?

Yes? No? Shut up, Jawbone?

So playlists.... I have been doing a lot of research lately and have been exclusively listening to the complete works of Terrence McKenna (about 52 hours of audio on DMT, synapses, and general human weirdness.)

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Lady
Mirwais - Naive Song
Mirwais - Disco Science
Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK
Sex Pistols - My Way
Suicidal Tendencies - Fascist Pig
Suicidal Tendencies - Subliminal
The Stranglers - Peaches
Pink Floyd - Dogs
Muddy Waters - I Feel Like Going Home
Miles Davis - Shhh/Peaceful

I vote no. A) Because no one wants me to talk about Oasis week after week, 2) Because I'm not sure I can actually qualify things. (i.e., why do you like Oranges?)

You just like it "because you like it?"

My best friend and I have had the same discussion time after time; he does not want to explain why he likes a particular artists. He's a great guitarist and is very knowledgeable about music, but for me to try to push him to tell me why he likes one artists but not a similar one is an offense punishable by death. He said it lessens his enjoyment.

Essentially, yes. Sure with some song or artists, they are easier to qualify than others, but in the end it's about as easy as explaining why my favorite color is blue and why I think brunettes are more sexy than blondes.

I think he's correct to a certain degree. Sometimes it makes you lose focus of appreciating a song as a whole.

I think I understand what you mean. Is it the synth winding in and out of your ears? The looped guitar lick?
Maybe I'm not sure. However, Naive Song is equally (abrasively) engrossing because of the digital voice effects and lyrics - you may like it. It's great for writing to.

Now, let's talk Oasis!

I'm inclined to think the two of you are correct.

My wife told me she'd stop watching movies with me if I kept on spending the whole time dissecting what was horribly wrong with it. I stopped doing it (or at least focusing on it) after I realized how right she was; I enjoy movies a lot more today.

This whole thing makes me sound like an anal-retentive jerk. I probably need to explain (for my own sake)...

I don't decide to like a band based upon what I've figured out is so great about them. I like them because I just do. I think most people are like that. The problem comes in when I look at a band like Sigur Ros, which no one else that I know personally enjoys, and I try to figure out why I get some kind of enjoyment out of them. I'm sure I could find some reason that I didn't hate them like the rest of my friends, and that's what I was getting at.

Now that you've successfully poked legions of holes in my idea, I'll shut up and wait for my iPod to sync up with my library so Last.fm scrobbles my music accurately for now on.

The reasons could be manifold.

Some people don’t like music that ‘takes its time’, but prefer it to start quickly, tell its story quickly, and end quickly. Others like music that lingers. I’m in the latter group.

Some people can get powerful visual images from lyrics without knowing what the lyrics are about. Others don’t like that they’re not able to make sense of them. I’m in the latter group again. Though actual nonsense lyrics (like Hopelandic songs) don’t bother me, I don’t like it when I can hear actual lyrics being sung, but can’t decipher/understand them—which was, originally, my main motivation for learning Icelandic: I couldn’t make out Björk’s or Sigur Rós’ lyrics without it. Same goes for Irish, actually, only with Enya/Clannad songs.

Or maybe you just need to get new friends.

I've finally gotten around to capturing mine. This is with the new counts since I got my MacBook. As you can see, I flip through songs a lot...the counts aren't up there that high.

You wouldn’t by any chance happen to like a band called Breaking Benjaming, would you?

(Something’s wonky with that picture, or rather with the server it’s on.)

There we go. The .png wasn't showing up properly.

Yeah, BB is my favorite band, so I tend to fire up their songs most often. This list is a bit misleading, however, because it's only representative of the last couple of weeks.

It’s still not showing up properly. Looks like the server’s not set to recognise .png as an image—opening the picture in a new tab prompts a download, too, rather than showing the picture.

Very odd. I changed the file type to .jpeg and re-uploaded it. Did you empty your cache or reload the page? It shows up fine for me in Safari since I changed it from a .png...

Very odd indeed. I just emptied the cache and it still downloads the image instead of displaying it. But not that second one, only the first one.

I'm I pretty big fan. I have been following them since before they went mainstream.

I’d never actually heard of them, but about three fourths of harbinger’s top 25 were by them, so I took a wild flying guess that possibly he might like them.

Hehe, you caught me.

Exactly. They had the sound that I had been craving, and from the first listen, I was hooked on their music. I saw them last summer with Three Days' Grace, Puddle of Mudd and Red and that was, by far, the best concert I've ever been to. It was raining during all of BB's set, and my (at the time) wife-to-be was with me...very cool, indeed.
