I made this icon and I kinda like it, I am a newbie at icons so this is my first. Should I continue with these?

I thought this would go good with choosen and other grey themes.

No don't do that! Stick with the movies, man!

I will now start thinking about what movie to base my next set on. If you have any ideas or comments please email me!
[edit] ok I just had a blinding epiphany.. THE USUAL SUSPECTS!

Have you seen it? It would be PERFECT!! there are so many material objects that contribute to the story that would make for great icon oppurtunities.. well just IMO anyway

oh yeh! there is a bunch of stuff from 'the pin-board' alone. Might be difficult, the details (some very small) are very important to those items.

Hehehe.. it's a good movie.. but i dunno. i can't think of any objects from memory.
I need something bigger or maybe more mainstream. See, the obvious choices would be movies like starwars (has HEEEEEAAAAPSS of objects and stuff that'd make great icons..) but the problem with starwars is, it's soooooooo overdone. though, i'm sure i could do a good job of it. other movies i could do would be lord of the rings. that too has a lot of objects and stuff i could use. But it's too recent after dave brasgala's set. and mine would pale in comparison to his!!

I would love to do a full system set based on a movie. but obviously picking the right movie would be necessary. as i'd need a LOT of reference material and such to do the 80+ icons a system set needs.

I've a few movie ideas up my sleeve. but still not 100% on which could work as a system set.

To be honest, I've never been impressed by any movie inspired system set. I don't think it's possible to make one that's actually usable. There's a certain amount of neutrality you need to have so you don't need to change your icons everytime you change your theme or desktop or whatever.

Zyote's movie icons, however, dismiss neutrality altogether, making it unfeasible to make an entire system set. (which is what makes them so cool in the first place.)

But if you think it can be done, don't let me stop you. I would love to see it pulled off, or even attempted.

Hey, i never really thought about that. I agree that some icon sets only work in certain themes / desktops. and it's a hassle having to change your icons i think. i guess my fight club icons and these new 2001 icons are really just 128x128 pixel illustrations. they're not really for systems and such. my icons will never be used as folders or important things.

although, i've had a number of comments from people that say they use my icons for hard drive icons and such on their desktops. so i guess they're somewhat usable.

These are great for app icons... maybe for your next set pick a movie and make a replacement for every app that comes standard with your mac and then some and use the movie for ideas and analogies!

No, its more like we pick a movie.... indiana jones to use as the basic idea.... then for like safari we have his hat... and then for like imovie we have an old fashion video camera.... and so on and so forth..... so really you base all the app icons around the movie idea which is indiana jones.... you catch my idea?

That is nice, please continue. It's very clear, and objects placed inside and spilling out would look cool.

p.s. I wish I could make icons, you guys are all very talented, keep up the good work!

hehe.. yeah. i guess i do have a few. still... i believe that the more icons you do the better you get. as a lot of them may suck, but the more "bad" icons you get out of your system then by playing the numbers game, you're likely to have a couple of good ones!

and we always learn from our mistakes the most. so i try to create as many mistakes as possible!

hehe.

Looking good Mac Guy 15. Not quite sure what Komisar means with the sites folder not matching, possibly because it doesn't have the same cartoony feel of the speaker and film reel?

The books in the library folder I think could be turned, looked at from the same perspective as the pictures.

I'm really looking forward to these

Yeah, some of the icons just have a feel while the public icon throws it off.

Ah yeah I see looking at it more. The public one is sort of a stock affair compared to the others. Maybe make the guy on the public icon that generic bloke you get on loo doors, sort of more lite-hearted

Thanks! *blush* It was originally in grayscale. I like my apps without color in the dock. I think it looks better that way.

Yeah !!!
That Safari icon is way cool. When is it going to be available for us ??? Is it available for us ???

Can you people list some of your most frequented sites for icons ??? Like the wallpape thread that is happening, it would be cool if everyone listed their favorite icon sites. You know, share the icon wealth my babies !!!
Peace,

New:

This is an icon idea for use with Siro. Advice needed. Anyone have suggestions on how I should include the symbols? (home, docs, apps, library, etc.)

Demograph68,
Very Cool Icons my Mac Compadre ! I think that they would be a perfect compliment to the SIRO Theme. ROCK ON

Perhaps combine things :

folder top : gray looks better than the black zigzag
folder body : gray glow horizontal instead of curved, like the theme itself
bottom : gray line is better than with the Siro strip
bottom glow : a bit more shiny like the theme glow
symbols : gray instead of Siro, and a bit 3D (inlay perhaps)
overall : lower the icon a bit to more rectangular proportion

Just my opinion (who am I to speak ?). You're going very well

How about a dropstate? Should it open on top or glow on the bottom?

Well, this will take me a while to complete. I still have to finish the dropstates for them plus better 32 and 16 sized versions. Besides that, I'm still not so satisfied with the current design...

I'd have to say that yes, perhaps it's not perfect yet.. the main problem i find is that it doesn't currently work on a white background, due to the top of the folder being also white.

you might need to knock it down a few %, or stick some kind of border around it...

I think the glow out of the bottom would be very unique. It is great to watch an idea evolve. Nicely done - Siro needs its own icon set.
