I'm curious regarding whether I should be using the OSX_V8_AP5_XEON cruncher as used by the Mac Pros or if I should be using the Core2duo cruncher.

The Corei7 isn't a Xeon but it's a something way more than just a Core2duo.

Ideas?

I'm using the stock client until I have a better idea.

If I remember correctly, part of the Xeon was the inclusion of SSE4.1, that was what Alex was leveraging.

I think I would stick with the Core2Duo for the time being, I plan on asking Urs at Lunatics if he can update the apps a little bit to take advantage of some of the newer stuff.

I took a little risk and tried the Xeon as the Corei7 860 has SSE/SSE2/SSE3/Supplemental SSE3, 4.1 and 4.2.

So far: It seems to be working. Watching the temperatures carefully and I'll keep an eye on the stats as well.

More information as I get it.

I have the i7 imac, and I'm using the xeon client. This i7 has the hyperthreading running 8 clients at the same time. I'm running both the xeon and the I7 in 64 bit.

As for the temp, it's acceptable. I've been running 24/7 since I set it up, and it's been no problem.

As for time, the units take about 35 to 50 % more on the i7 as compared to the xeon. i7=2.75 hours, and the xeon takes approx 2 hours. (not scientific).

Once Urs finishes up his current work, AP for ATI Linux, CPU AstroPulse apps (FreeBSD, Linux32 and OS X, he plans on starting upgrades of the MB apps for the same platforms.

What kind of RAC are you achieving Bill?

Just curious to know what I can expect. And yes, all eight "cores" are chugging away.

Lots faster than my G5 2.5 (anywhere between 1-5 hours per work unit but I see a lot of 5 hour work units).

I took a screen capture of my current i7 times but I'm away from the comp at the moment.
Looks like less than 1 hour to 3 hours times.

Here is the detail for the i7. I hope this reassures you. It's a sweet machine.

Good grief, if only I could afford a Mac Pro. I still love my Tower Of Power Mac, PowerBook Worm, and Desklamp iMac but those numbers are ridiculous.
