I'm seeming to find the d2 HD's are more stable and better. But folks at Lacie will never say that. They are say is only the casing that changes. What do others feel?

I just got couple Porsches external HD's that both would not mount consistently, which I've never had such problem with d2. also they were real hot, and smelled burned rubber.

And I also had a porsche external cd burner that konked out after year of light use, while my d2 dvd burner doing fine.

It is true that only the casing changes.

Unfortunately, according to a tech friend of mine, the Porsche casings SUCK. They are FAR less reliable than the d2 casings.

YMMV.

There could be something with these drives. I know wholesale teh Porsche drives are quite a bit cheaper than the same D2. Usually around 20 to 30%. Strangly they usually sell for more at retail.

Man, my typos were bad......damn. Anyway, I was just stating a strange thing in the wholesale side of these drives. The Porsche drives are cheaper to buy. Usually, this indicates that the product is either end-of-life or could indicate that there is a known problem and the company that makes them is reducing prices on them to clear inventory. This may or may not be the case but just something that I have noticed about them for the last few months.

They are not exactly the same I think. I have a D2 and when I plug in my iPod it charges while my computer is sleeping. A friend of mine has a Porsche and the iPod does NOT charge when the computer is sleeping.

Goldfinger, that's pretty much a firewire passthrough, and depending on the computer you might or might not be able to do that, for example my Powermac G4 and my bro's iMac G4 cannot charge an ipod while sleeping, but my Powerbook G4 and my mom's Powermac G5 can. On the other hand you might be right, the D2 might offer powered firewire while the input is off, but that'd be really odd.

Actually, I beleive it does since the computer can be off and the ports can be used. I know it is mentioned in the manual that comes with the drive.
