Apple has replaced the original contractors of its Campus 2 ("spaceship") construction project, as we previously reported, and has now appointed two other firms -- Rudolph & Sletten, and Holder Construction -- to take over the project, after firing the original partnership of DPR/Skanska. The latter firm had said earlier that it had reached an "impasse" in negotiations over changes in the scope of the work, and had been terminated from the project.

The new campus, now well underway, was originally planned to open in late 2015, but early changes and delays caused that to be pushed back to late 2016. It is now unclear if the change of contractors will further delay the opening of the campus, which Apple urgently needs to help accommodate its growing workforce.

The new facility was designed to house some 12,000 employees, though other teams would continue to be headquartered in other buildings, including the original and current campus at Infinite Loop, other buildings around Cupertino and nearby cities, as well as in facilities scattered around the US and other countries. The new headquarters, which takes up only a portion of the 175-acre former HP campus, will offer a total of 2.8 million square feet of facility space, with some 821,000 square feet of it given over to the main building -- roughly two-thirds the size of the Pentagon.

Rising costs may have played a role in the dismissal of the original contractors. The facility was originally estimated to cost $4 billion when Steve Jobs -- in his final public appearance -- laid out the case for the campus to the Cupertino City Council, but costs quickly ballooned to $5 billion, and may increase further.

Rudolph & Sletten were recently added onto the project to handle the interior build-outs, but now in partnership with Atlanta-based Holder Construction will handle the completion of the whole project, which includes other facilities such as parking garages, an underground "Town Hall" theater, a visitor's center, and transportation depot, among other buildings. Holder was also recently brought on board to to oversee mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and the two firms are believed to have won an effort to finish the massive project through the quality of the work done to assist the original partnership of Swedish firm DPR and US-based Skanska.

The Campus 2 plan won approval in October of 2013, but construction did not begin until nearly a year later as the land was first cleared of older HP buildings, and then the groundwork was completed for the foundation of the new building. Skanska said it a statement that it would lose $800 million in potential revenue from its termination off the project, but has never officially confirmed that it was working for Apple at all, only referring to its recently-lost job as a dispute with "the customer."

I fully expected that the cost would skyrocket because greed in contractors is impossible to keep under control. These contractors expect that everyone in the main office (and have a title) will be able to retire on the money they can skim off a $4 billion project.

Also, if any company has deep pockets, that would be Apple.

Give the project to Donald Trump. He'll get it done on time. This will keep him busy enough to forget about running for office.
