It's amazing all the people bringing up rum - that's some crap right there, and I don't care what kind of rum it is. I'll agree with several other posts in that you have to try a few good tequilas instead of blaming your preference on Cuervo - Cuervo sucks.
If you've got the cash, you could always try a little of this:

I drink very little beer and a lot of rum, for some reason.
I really have grown to dislike a lot of the bigger names like Baccardi, Captain Morgan's, etc. Always too sweet or something for me...makes me gag. I really enjoy Appleton's Reserve or (when I have some extra money) Appleton's Estate Extra, which I love. Newfoundland Screech is also a pretty decent rum for the price (although that could be some hometown sentiment coming out there ).
Ameretto Sours are a great drink, especially when you just want to suck them back or when there's ladies around. Otherwise, I mostly drink them on the rocks, or with a splash of Pepsi (East Coast represent!).

It just needs to come from Bourbon County, Kentucky, right?

It originated there, but legally it can be made anywhere as long as it's made from mostly corn and aged at least two years. Most is still made in Kentucky though.

Totally agree. Myers is great when you want a darker rum, but Mt. Gay is simply superb. I could drink Mt. Gay all day all year. It's that good. I'd even give you a drink after you roll your SUV.

Jack, and any other whisky straight or on the rocks. I like single malt whisky but can't afford to buy it all the time. Jim Beam is also good for Bourbon whisky.
Rum is good. Usually drink white rum mixed, but now that I've tried some dark rum, I'm liking them straight. I tried Mount Gay last week from reading this thread, excellent rum. Went down very smooth on the rocks. Almost too smooth.

I am a Single Malt guy too.
I once a 40 ounce bottle with a friend (he has his too) and we talk poetry, women, work then more poetry and women.
We finished our bottles on some sort of weird philosophy, and no headaches.
*Good Times*

Oops, I forgot to mention that Mount Gay was also a personal favourite as well. Found it a couple years ago and really liked it. I think someone also mention Cruzan somewhere, and that's made a regular appearance on my shelf as well.
Still, none of them beat Appleton's Estate Extra, imho.

It's really too bad it's so hard to track down the really good rums. There are quite a few rums that don't make it from the Carribean to the States. Almost makes me want to move back to Puerto Rico.

Langavulin or 30+ year old cognac (Leyrat XO)
Pernod with ice and cold water
Martini cocktail (damn cold Noilly Prat, damn cold Gordons or Bombay Sap, ice, at least -25 degrees C and a dash of lemon peel). All in a very cold glass. Stirred not shaken of course, ice removed before drinking.

Good to see many lovers of the Lagavulin. One of the Nectars of the Gods, truly.

I just thought the slogan for Mount Gay was hilariously appropriate

I finally had a chance last night to partake of the 18 year old Macallan. Wow. Holy ****. Holy crap. Damn. What other colorful metaphors can I think of?
That is THE best adult beverage that I have ever had. And the best single malt evar. I had two of them. And at 20 bucks a glass, I figured that was enough. I also had one of my favs: Lagavulin. Needless to say, the drink part of the tab was a bit high.
