I don't think any of us are too worried about an OS that is 2 years, at least, away from release.

i noticed that the article [and those linked from it] had a lot of sage-like quotes from a microsoft employee named "steve ballmer". i've never heard of him, but i like to put a face to a name, so i was wondering if , maybe, anyone had, by any chance, say, a quicktime movie of steve ballmer they could post, so we could get an insight into the kind of collosal intellects that were at work on this project?

Why would you be worried about it in the first place?

Longhorn has some nice features which OS X has had for some time. Also bear in mind that Longhorn is currently slated for August 2005, by which time we'll be on OS X 10.4 and eagerly awaiting 10.5.

Actually, last I heard LH was pushed back indefinitely, and I think a 2006 release is now what might happen with it. All the better for Apple.

thanx chris. i knew somebody would have it stashed away somewhere. [presumably not in the 'porn' section of your hard drive, tho']. y'know, it's strange, but after watching that movieclip, i have a sudden uncontrollable urge to run out in the back garden and swing from tree to tree while munching a banana - what can it all mean?!

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

I do the same. I simply could not believe that movie the first time I saw it! I had to link everyone I know in my comp sci class to it.

I'm actually a bit curious about Longhorn. The compositing model looks good, and will presumably be quite fast with the proper hardware (I doubt it will run well under 1GHz just as WinXP does not run well on a 400MHz machine) and will probably have good hardware acceleration as MS has such a heavy influence over the the Graphic card industry (DirectX).
What makes me curious is why they are waiting so long to release it. I presume it will have most of the backwards compatibility that present Windows Oses have, so that can't really be the problem. Is it more of an economical measure for MS to wait until more people start buying new machines capable of running it, or is it related to MS Licensing 6 running out around then, and be up for renewal?
For those who love to mock MS, I wouldn't do that. MS has the resources and the staying power to implement just about any technology it wants, and if Apple slacks any time up until then, MS will trump them for features. I remember back in 2000 when Windows 2000 had been released how many Mac fans were dissing the supposed 64000 bugs in that OS, but that in the place I worked, and some others, a lot of Mac graphics types switched over to Win2000 as it was fast, stable, and ran all the software that OS9 people had as well or better than on OS9.
On top of this MS specifically changed the interface in WinXP to the Luna theme in order to counteract Mac OSX. Mac fans (including me btw) might have found the XP interface to be cheap, but loads of Windows people who had never seen OSX in action and therefore had no comparison (thinking the Mac was/is still OS9) were impressed.
Additionally, the major software vendors Macromedia and Adobe, both previously Apple staples, now code for Windows primarily and it shows in the interfaces of products such as FlashMX and Photoshop, which are less responsive and more cluncky on OSX than they are under Windows.
All this might change, but, as I said, if Apple slacks off, MS will be there to gather thatt slack up. The battle is not yet over, so to speak.

I think it would be great if someone could edit in an Apple logo somewhere in the video when Balmer says "I love this company."
Any takers?

If Longhorn, in the year 2006 (or whatever) is going to be "M$ answer to OS X", then it's going to be a very slow conversation.
Reminds me of a skit I saw in high school...
(imagine slow drawling accents)
Farmer 1: There goes farmer Brown's cow.
(long pause)
Farmer 2: No, that's farmer Jones' cow.
(long pause)
Farmer 3: This conversation is getting too complicated. I'm going home.

Why are Mac users so addicted to what MS is doing with Longhorn? The thing is not even in beta yet.
The thought of seeing threads about Longhorn for the next two to three years... oy.

Was it Win95 that had all the hype and a gigantic launch? And then remember the consecutive let-downs with uptake of newer Windows?
I suspect that MS is going to hype for two/three years for a massive PR launch of ShortHorn. I'm sure MS wouldn't mind spending a billion of spare cash on something to generate the sales!

Actually, that is my only beef right now:
Flash is faster on the PC, Photoshop is more responsive on the PC... and it's Macromedia and Adobe's fault! It's obviously just not optimized code.
I've heard from friends that Flash MX 2004 on the Mac is no faster than MX... that's bogus. Flash crawls on the Mac compared to my crappy PC at work. And that's just wrong.

Dude, by the time Longhorn is released, OS X would be 10.5 at least. It will be different than what it is now greatly, as well as being much much better, so will still be at least if not surpass Micro$oft's Longhorn. Either way, it can't beat OS X. Windows users are still going to be stuck with XP for at least another 2 years, that really sucks. But good for Apple since more people will make the switch seeing how much better OS X is getting as each year passes.

The problem with that is MS is facing an uphill battle with the spread of linux and unix compatible OSes, they are all similar, all use opengl, all use similar resoureces, and etc.
Being compatible tho, MS wouldn't have the strangle hold in the market, and they'd only give an advantage for other OSes to get bigger..
No. MS wants to kill all the other OSes, my friends, and they will do that by making 'better standards' and 'having large corporations and schools standardize on them' making the open source standards obselete.

Two words.... Who Cares? This is just another Microsoft product which is going to be a fix for previous versions that you will have to buy to take advantage of. Anyone who thinks it will be any better than previous versions of there security flawed, virus engine operating systems deserves to loose the $399 price tag MS will charge for it. Just my 2 cents.

Uhh, I don't think Longorn is considered vaporware... It's in pretty heavy development right now. As for whatever OS X release is out then, I wouldn't call that vaporware either. They both exist; they're not unfounded marketing hype in front of no real product.
Example of vaporware, RealPC for OS X.
