Would I be correct in thinking that the single 1.8ghz G5 PowerMac would be the quietest PowerMac available, since it would need less cooling than the dual processor models?

Also, does anyone know if either the NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Ultra or ATI RADEON 9600 XT are fanless GPUs?

Thanks!!

Hi!

1. Yes, you would.

2. The FX5200 is fanless. I don't know about the 9600XT, but I doubt that it's fanless.

The 9600s are fanless, at least according to ATi - it's one of their selling points. I doubt that Apple would add a fan.

1. The SP 1.8 would be the quietest, but note that the DPs are quite quiet, too. 2. I believe I read in the Anandtech review of the Mac Nvidia 6800 that the 9600XT is fanless, but I'm not certain of that. On this xlr8yourmac report page one person writes he believes the 9600XT is fanless. Finally, if you google "9600XT fanless," you'll come across a number of hits referring to the 9600XT being fanless, although those pages mostly refer to the PC version.

i believe my dual 2.0 g5 has a 9600xt, and it is fanless. i ordered it stock refurbished (10/04) which should have been the fx5200, but it came with a 128mb graphics card.

it's definitely fanless, i can post/check the device id to confirm it's 9600xt status.

this link (about 4/5 of the way down (search on 4152)) ties device id: 0x4152 with the radeon 9600xt

i could snap a picture, but without a doubt the card is fanless, and actually the heatsink is rather small!
