Discover today announced that on September 16, cardmembers will be able to add their Discover cards to Apple Pay. As part of the launch Discover is rewarding cardmembers in the US who use their Discover cards through Apple Pay with a 10 percent Cashback Bonus.

Cardmembers who pay with their Discover card using Apple Pay will automatically earn the bonus on up to $10,000 of in-store purchases. Discover it Miles, Miles and Escape cardmembers will earn an extra 10 miles per dollar on up to $10,000 of in-store purchases.

When users add a credit or debit card to Apple Pay, the actual card numbers are not stored on the device, nor on Apple servers. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element on your device. Each transaction is authorized with a one-time unique dynamic security code. In stores, Apple Pay works with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch, as well as iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, upon availability.

"We are excited for Discover cardmembers to have the ability to use Apple Pay. Rewards have always been important to our cardmembers, and we want to make sure they receive a generous offer for shopping with Discover and Apple Pay," said Heather Roche, vice president of rewards at Discover. "We want to encourage new and existing Discover cardmembers to add their Discover card to Apple Pay with a few simple clicks using our mobile app, take advantage of this 10% Cashback Bonus, and experience the ease and convenience of using Apple Pay."

Discover cardmembers using Apple Pay will continue to receive all of the protection, services and benefits offered by Discover, including the company's $0 Fraud Liability Guarantee which means a cardmember is never responsible for unauthorized purchases on a Discover card. Also retained is access to 24-hour US based customer care centers.

Coming soon, we hear. Canadian banks are quite conservative and it doesn't surprise me that they are hesitant. But yes, I'm quite impatient to get my Canadian cards working with Apple Pay (I do have a US card that works perfectly in Canada -- indeed I have a harder time finding places to use it in the States!).
