That brings up some interesting questions: What kind of control does Ben have over the monster? Did he just want it to create a diversion? Or is it all some kind of elaborate hoax (yes, that's a long shot)?

From Ben's behavior, I got the impression that he had the power to call it and that was pretty much it. That would be why he told the others they needed to run as far away from the soldiers as possible — clearly he wasn't afraid of the soldiers at that point since the monster was attacking them, so he must have believed the monster would come after the castaways once it finished with the other intruders.

Well, that certainly makes sense. OTOH, Ben's behavior always seems to be deliberately calculated to elicit actions or thoughts that further his goals. He can't be trusted; there's always the possibility (probability?) that he has an ulterior motive.

so jacob, posing as christian, lured claire off... or perhaps claire had one too many bangs to the head and wandered off.

I didn't want to look too closely, but those bodies of carl and rousseau, they didn't look much like them, did they? So the soldiers buried them? Really?

<hoping>

also, I do not know why kate was being so mysterious about her errand for Sawyer. She was obviously giving money to his ex with the baby. Why should that put jack over the edge? Oh yeah, jealous much.

OK, I saw Dr. Doolittle do this years ago!

(he called on a giant whale to push the island)

I love the guy who never ages. For some reason I just don't look to time travel for the answer to that. Dunno why.

Claire was super weird. I have a feeling we'll be seeing Desmond less and less for a while.

Oh, and what a gigantic whining pansy Ben was this episode. I realize he just got screwed over on the loss of his daughter by the island/rich guy who's name escapes me at the moment, but c'mon, Ben. I thought you were tougher than that.

Yes, he deflated greatly in my eyes. But remember, he will still manipulate Sayid to kill people in the near future. And I think he will end up with Kate in the end. Or maybe creepy Richard will end up with Kate.

I don't think it's time travel either. It seemed like he'd been living on the island for quite a while when Ben was young, and he looked the same then too. (By the way, in case anybody missed it, he was also the recruiter who sent John that pamphlet about the physics program.)

That part was so Twin Peaks. My brother brought up an interesting point, though: Earlier in the series, they said that only Claire is supposed to raise Aaron — but now both she and Christian seem happy to give it up (to Kate?).

I think Ben has been on a downward spiral for a while now, ever since he started to suspect the island liked Locke better. His inability to protect one of the few people he cares about seems to have finally knocked him down. Obviously he'll be back before too long.

I have been bitching about this endlessly to my friend I watch with.

The entire psychic who told her she must raise it, knew the plane would crash, but later turns out to be a fake in a different flashback thing may be the out, but I'm not happy about it.

What I found interesting about last night's episode is we now know that the predestination reaches as far back as the late 50s/early 60s. I get the feeling Immortal Guy may turn out to be very, very old (talkin' in the 1000s here). And I still suspect he might be Jacob.

---

Tangent: I have no idea what other people thought of Christian, but I figured he was a ghost or manifestation of the island. That was until I saw that stubble last night.

If you're taking about Richard, I'm pretty sure he's not Jacob. He was one of Ben's subordinates, whereas Jacob is Ben's boss.

It appears Richard is a subordinate at times. But he's been around forever (perhaps literally). He's the guy who went over Ben's head and helped John kill his father via Sawyer. He's the guy who told Ben to go back to the Dharma camp when he wanted to run away when he was young, then had him gas that camp years later. He, not Ben, recruited Juliette. $5 says he's the one in charge now that the others are in hiding at the temple. And as far as mysterious and intriguing is concerned, Richard is the new Ben.

I won't be surprised if I'm wrong about the Jacob thing, but there's way more going on with Richard to be revealed yet.

Oh, I forgot to add, was anyone else confused by Black Dude's appearance? With John, he acted like your typical Other, but he put together the team that first visited the island from Rich Guy's freighter. I can't tell if he's a defector, or some kind of force working for the island without Rich Guy's knowledge. His team's attitude doesn't seem to reflect that of the mercenary presence on the freighter, whom which seems to have a had a more direct line to Rich Guy.

"Rich Guy" is Charles Widmore, Penny's father, possible crew member on the Black Rock, and maker of fine home pregnancy tests.

His name was the only thing I couldn't remember. Rich Guy was easier than Penny's Father.

Don't worry, I'm sure I'll forget Charles or Widmore by next week.

I take it we're supposed to think Claire is dead. That's really the only plausible explanation as to why she'd be so relaxed about giving up Aaron and why Christian doesn't want Locke to mention her.

I still want to believe that Christian is actually alive. Remember, we know his body is on the island and Jack found his empty coffin.

Are we supposed to think that Richard Alpert may be Locke's dad? His grandmother certainly seemed to know who he was (despite saying she didn't) and he looks to be twice Emily's age. Which item(s) belonged to John? I was thinking the sand, compass, and comic book all represented the island.

Seeing Mr. Abadon as the orderly was creepy. So it was he who planted the seed to get Locke on the island. Interesting.

I bet we see in coming episode that everyone of Ben's "list" was manipulated into being on that plane.

Ben and Widmore have been playing some kind of chess involving the island.

Is the next episode the last one of the season? I was under the impression from somewhere that they'd only make 13 episodes this season because of the strike, instead of the 16 planned originally.

It's kind of weird that they're skipping a week and then running two hours rather than, y'know, running an episode every week.

So Charlie, Boone, and Libby are the three who allegedly survived the crash but died before the rescue. I always thought Charlie would be one of them, but that was because of his discussion with Penny at the end of S3. Their story still doesn't explain how he could have had the video conference with her. Perhaps she's in on the Oceanic 6 cover story? I won't even consider the possibility she's dead.

Yay, Desmond and Penny! A happy "ending"! I was thinking we wouldn't get to see him again, but then I remembered that Ben wants to kill Penny.

I didn't call it until Ben mentioned problems on the island, but I should've known for sure based on what Walt said.

Um, Jin? Jump!

Er…actually, Locke = 17th-century philosopher.

Anyway, I thought it was a pretty good finale, though I'm still sore that they reneged on telling us who Jacob is this season. At this point, I'd say Ben is pretty clearly the most interesting character on the show, so I'm glad that it looks like he's going to be central to the plot next season.

I like how they threw in that "Is this the magic box?" "No, you idiot" dialogue to shut us fans up before we started speculating on that.

The only character I find more interesting than Ben is Desmond. Above all else, I'm glad they gave him and Penny a happy ending.
