Rick Santorum on Sunday took on separation of church and state.

"I don't believe in an America where the separation of church and state are absolute," he told 'This Week' host George Stephanopoulos. "The idea that the church can have no influence or no involvement in the operation of the state is absolutely antithetical to the objectives and vision of our country...to say that people of faith have no role in the public square? You bet that makes me want to throw up."

The GOP candidate was responding to comments he made last October. He had said that he "almost threw up" after reading JFK's 1960 speech in which he declared his commitment to the separation of church and state.

Santorum also on Sunday told Meet The Press host David Gregory that separation of church and state was "not the founders' vision."

The GOP candidate has been doubling down on religious rhetoric in an effort to court evangelical voters ahead of Super Tuesday. Last week, he questioned Obama's spiritual beliefs.

"[Obama believes in] some phony ideal, some phony theology ... not a theology based on the Bible, a different theology," he said.

The first part is like his other statements, there's a kernel of truth in there. Religion is an important part of many people's lives, they can't comprehend living without the perspective that their religion brings. Yet because some people can't talk about their religion like adults in the presence of people who don't believe, we treat it like it's some special condition that shouldn't ever be acknowledged by government, That's BS: the Constitution's freedom of religion is the freedom to practice your religion openly, not the freedom from ever hearing about religion.

As always, though, Santorum flubs it in the delivery. I think all that bile he's been spewing lately has given him a stomach bug or something, if he feels the need to vomit all over JFK.

And Santorum would benefit from taking some pepto-bismol and reading the speech again. If it weren't for JFK's spech and its acceptance among a broad swath of the population, Santorum himself may never have gotten elected, because many more people may have suspected that he owed his allegiance to the Pope, and not the country.

That bit on the end, though, is simply a bit to get some of Bachmann's crazy supporters before the election, since it's right out of her playbook, Please give credit where credit is due!

I'm just marveling at how popular he's become on the left in such short time. Kind of makes you wonder if perhaps the ones most quick to lodge this indictment aren't struggling with illnesses of their own. With regard to Santorum, they've certainly been sleeping soundly in their caves until a few short weeks ago.

I mentioned the same thing in the other thread about Santorum. It's amazing how "nutty" and "batty" candidates who regular folks probably have a lot in common with, end up becoming once their opponents start seeing them as a threat. Sounds like irrational fear. Conservaphobia?

At the time it was unusual for a catholic to win office and people were scared of the pope controlling the president like a puppet. For what it's worth, I also have misgivings about the prospect of a Santorum nomination, but batshit crazy? Nah. Neither one of the above are saying Santorum is batshit crazy and while I'd be very, very happy to see Giuliani (whom I wanted to win over McCain last go-around) or Jeb Bush run, apparently they realize that primaries can be hard on candidates that want the job really, really badly.

Speaking of hate, given the conservatives are luke warm on Mittens to begin with, and given that historically second term presidents do less, and the GOP will likely retain control of the House (and that the conservative field will be of higher quality in 4 years), what do they have to gain by Obama losing, really? (This only 50% patronizing). The ones that believe in government inaction and gridlock is the best case scenario, that is.

Edit: To more directly address your point, though, the math doesn't lie, does it? Your election chances against an incumbent are much slimmer.
