Isn't the hot part more where it would rest on your thigh instead of near the jewels? And Salty, frankly the body is much smarter than that; it'll let you know when it can't regulate the temperature around the testes, primarily by making you awfully uncomfortable.

Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

Apple is actually pretty slick about only calling them notebooks instead of laptops.

I'll bet that the warning is there because of some potential lawsuit that Apple wants to head off. Same thing with the iPods. Some idiot was complaining about hearing loss, Apple updated the iPod software to limit the volume. I'm sure this is a similar thing.

I'm getting a MBP. My iBook is always cool, fan never turns on. Even the part that's warm isn't "hot". So that's the only thing that I'll miss from this thing. Everything else will be a vast improvement. Plus 17" is sexy.

I have my doubts about both your statements, to be honest. IBM now has a G5 that can be put into laptops, and we'd still be on a non-junkpile architecture.

Wasn't the Intel switch supposed to solve the power consumption and heat dissipation issues? If the MacBooks are truly this dangerous, then they must have made the problem even worse.

Do not leave the bottom of your MacBook in contact with your lap or any surface of
your body for extended periods. Prolonged contact with your body could cause
discomfort and potentially a burn.

When you’re using your PowerBook or charging the battery, it is normal for the bottom
of the case to get warm. For prolonged use, place your PowerBook on a flat, stable
surface. The bottom of the PowerBook case functions as a cooling surface that transfers
heat from inside the computer to the cooler air outside.

Take a look at the thread about thermal compound usage in the MacBook. I think this is a major part of the problem. Too much compound is sometimes WORSE than too little. If Apple is actually expecting the new machines to be assembled this way, I think there are going to be a LOT of problems, particularly with the laptops. Bad news.

If I remember correctly from college, isn't your iBook a 500 mhz G3? I mean, not a lot of heat comin out of that baby.

Yes, but that was one of the issues with the PPC chip. Isn't Intel supposed to be working run their chips a lot cooler? Wasn't that one of the good points about the switch?

The Intel-chips have better performance/watt which means they get as hot as the PowerPC chips did get, but run 5 times faster. With the same performance/watt ratio Apple could have made them run as fast as the iBooks but 5 times cooler, but then people would have complained that their MacBooks have frozen away their foreskins.

If the heat gets to your lap, then there isn't a dissipation issue. It needs to get the heat away from the CPU, which it is doing.

Regardless, this is standard legal disclaiming. I'll bet lots of other laptops have these warnings too.
