Nadia Popovici was in the stands near the Canucks bench. She spotted a mole on the back neck of Brian Hamilton, the assistant equipment manager.
Popovici later told the Seattle Times that she had volunteered at hospitals, “surrounded with a lot of melanomas”. So when she saw the diameter, raised shape and “irregular border” of the mole on Hamilton’s neck, she knew she had to alert him.
She wrote a message on her cell phone, and went to lengths to gain his attention. So he'd read the message. It worked - he had the mole checked afterwards.
Hamilton had the mole removed and tested. It proved to be a type 2 malignant melanoma, a skin cancer that is curable if caught early.
Hamilton went to twitter, to search up the fan in question. Within a few hours, she was found. And invited to meet Hamilton during the next game.
During a timeout in Saturday’s game, the Canucks and Kraken announced a $10,000 scholarship for Popovici, towards medical school tuition.
2022 is off to a good start.
