i just thought of being useful and search the net for possible answers to our iTunes question...

The information is put together by a true audio technician who even worked on the original mpeg format. Read through and you'll see that he's been there and done that. He seems to know his stuff - more so than I do, that's for certain!

well if you want to read

The link above just directs you to this person's blog, with no additional info, but another link to the original article by Ken Rockwell.

This "Audiophile" pretty much tells you to use Apple default 128 bit ACC.

Real helpful.

If you tell any other Audiophile that you listen to compressed music they will point and laugh at you.

That's because they commonly don't like subjective testing, and have it ingrained in their minds that 128 kbps can *never* be perceptually transparent.

The latest public 128 kbps VBR listening test show iTunes AAC, LAME MP3, Ogg Vorbis, and WMA Pro as statistically tied, and all reach transparency for many, many samples.

After reading the article, the only real mistake I think the author makes is implying that the technology behind MP3 encoding hasn't changed over the years. While this might be true for the iTunes encoder, other encoders like LAME have been continually upgraded. And as the test I linked to above indicates, the best MP3 encoder today (LAME) is pretty much tied in sound quality to the best AAC encoder (iTunes) at 128 kbps VBR.

That said, I still use V2 --vbr-new LAME MP3 (about 192 kbps on average) for my lossy audio, mostly out of habit and because I have plenty of disc space. If you feel comfortable going out of iTunes (or using a plugin) for your CD ripping, then I think LAME today is a worthwhile alternative over AAC if you want the same sound quality but with wider compatibility.
