A quick internet search brings up precious little info.

Need to erase and restore a macbook pro but from an older TM backup than the last version. I know on a time capsule restore you can select an older date but I don't think you get this option using a vanilla external USB drive??

Dirty method - delete all the later snapshots. Or at least move their folders to the Trash with the Finder. After the restore, you could move them back.

At least I remember there being the same options to restore from older backups for external drives.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.
