What apps aren't coming to the party? Who is gonna go under and not survive?

Quark is like the spider you keep smacking with your slipper...it just doesn't want to die until you've smacked it hard enough.

I imagine that most apps will actually make it through the transition mostly unharmed. What we won't see are PowerPC builds of most apps more than one version past the switch date. Despite Apple's 'it's only a recompile' promises, actual development is about a lot more than writing and compiling code, and there's nothing they can do about that.

pfft, why wouldn't developers love this?
it'll stop ther customers sticking with versions of photoshop, etc, that already have the features they need.
i wonder where adobe 'll set the upgrade price cut off at this time , CS1?
plus all your games are probably screwed, you'll need new ones
and don't forget those pesky drivers for old printers that still work fine

i can see why this is good for apple and it's developers, but damn, this one's gonna hurt

I think your 'jump-ship' cynicism is in play here.

Is there more to it? Sure…

But one version? Please…

That's how it played out in the transition from 680x0 to PowerPC. It will play out this way again.

Let's examine all the what ifs:

Even if there is only one major universal binary version created for the transition...
Even if a user requires an upgrade to the latest, non-universal binary (2nd major revision after transition)...
Even if a user is still using a PowerPC Mac OS X box when the 2nd major revision comes out...

It would seem that this would not apply to most people, given that they will either:
1. opt to continue using the version that still works (not need the latest and greatest revision)
2. opt to buy a new intel-based mac
3. whine and moan, but still go with options 1 or 2...

Just playing devils advocate here. I was hoping for new machines yesterday at the WWDC keynote, but alas, the bombshell has thrown a wrench into all my plans. Guess I still need a new machine, but its value seems to have been diminished before even buying the machine. I'm sure the above situation may apply to me at some point or another...ugh.

How did it come to this? Goodbye PowerPC. | sensory output
