OK, I was in the process of jailbreaking my iPod touch (maybe a bad choice in retrospect but whatever) and I had to downgrade to 1.1.1 but when I downloaded an app and then had to upgrade to 1.1.2 again, there was an error message, and then my problem sarted happening.

Alright, I turn my iPod off completely (I think, i'm holding down the sleep/wake button and it just turns off theres no red slider) and then I turn the iPod on and it gives the plug into iTunes message. So I do but then it says i have to restore my iPod, so I click restore and then when it says preparing iPod to be restored, after a little while it says cannot restore iPod, an unknown error has occured...I have tried everything and can't seem to get anything to work....any ideas? please I'm desperate.

Try a hard reset: hold the sleep and home buttons at the same time until it restarts (about 5-10 seconds). After the hard reset, try restoring it.
