The long story short is that Intel's Skylake and Kaby Lake processors have a bug which can cause random crashes when running certain code while Hyperthreading is active. Intel has fixed it for their Skylake CPUs, but apparently not for Kaby Lake, and anyway Apple hasn't distributed that microcode update yet (at least not to me, I checked with sysctl).
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.
