I just read a post on another site that has me puzzled. The poster stated that Geforce cards are designed to run on 600mhz machines or faster, and if used in a slower cpu it will actually cause a degradation in Quartz performance. That you have to use a Radeon card in slower G4s.
I just installed a Geforce4MX in my G4/400gigether and it seems to have much better performance than before.
Placebo effect, or is this guy full of hot gas?
Thanks

I thought the point of QE was that some of the video processing for the computer. If this is the case, it shouldn't matter that the computer is less than 600MHz, additionally, many GeForce cards have been shipped in 466s+.

If you think that thing could power a truck, you ought to see the GeForce 4Ti I bought. It's not as insane as the forthcoming FX that takes a separate slot for the fan though!

Whoever said that you need at least a 600 MHz CPU was talking pure crap. A 3D video card will always increase QuartzExtreme performance, no matter what.

However you have to be careful: The GeForce4 MX is basically a GeForce2 MX GPU with minor design changes. They've gone from 0.18 Micron to 0.15 or 0.13 Micron (not sure) and now there are three MX-versions instead of two: The 420MX, the 440MX and the 460MX. The first two can be cooled by a heatsink only, the third needs a fan. But basically, the GeForce4MX 420 is a GeForce2 MX200 and the GeForce4 MX 440 and 460 are a GeForce2 MX400 only - due to higher clock frequency - a bit faster.

I'm assuming you're referring to my comment? I was replying to maxhedrum's question whether or not the guy is full of hot gas.

Ahh, I see, I messed up. It's just that it's the only part of my computer that contains a fan, that's all.

Thanks for the input folks. It didn't sound quite right.
I picked up one of the Apple pull Geforce4 cards that Poweron was selling for $99. I wanted to bring the vid card up to speed in my G4/400 and needed ADC for the LCD monitor. Was waiting for the Radeon 9000 to come out when this deal came up.
As it was going into a 2X AGP slot anyways, I figured that it would do the job for $80 less. My system is used primarily for Photoshop and graphics. Don't do any gaming and video is not on the near horizon.

Cheers
